Come along with Eric O at the SMA shop as he has a look at this 2002 Buick Regal with a Supercharged 3. 8 that he just put an engine in and then discovered on his test drive the car wouldn't get out of its own way! In the video he shows 2 different methods for checking a restricted exhaust. A video from the Scanner Danner Premium Channel that Paul is willing to share with us as he demonstrates pressure transducer testing! Remeber if you liked this video he did there is a lot more like it in there. Concider subscribing! Very cool vid!
Question. what would a normal running engine with good exhaust run for back pressure (psi) at idle and under load? Just wondering what the safe zone is.
I have my wifes 05 ford Escape that wont rev past 2500-3000rpm right now. it keeps getting an EGR code, but the EGR tests out fine.
After trying to drive the truck i drove it back home and i can hear the rear catalytic converter basically sounding like it sizzling inside. (I checked with my stethoscope) This vehicle runs 2 front cats on the manifolds, and 1 rear cat. The 2 front cats dont seem to make any noise when i checked with stethoscope.
I just replaced a flex pipe on the vehicle only 2 weeks ago, because it was blown apart. Now im wondering if the cat was already plugged, causing the flex pipe to self destruct! Lol

Alot of methods to test blocked ex systems like a thermal imager or a bore scope through the o2 sensor fitting. This is another way. Had a few blockages where engine would not start and easiest way(if you are suspecting blocked cat. Etc is to remove the engine pipe. Less time consuming and being a mobile mechanic the customer is usualy there so the proof is there right away. . In this case the engine ran fine but alot faster with a thermal imager and this method to prove it does look proffesional but not required. just my opinion after 30yrs in the trade. not hatn its a great vid just my opinion.

Paid my way through school working as a marine engine mechanic on pleasure boats. Depending on the exhaust layout, partially blocked exhausts due to carbon buildup were a relatively common problem. Engines ran okay only at low rpm. Boat owners were often getting estimates for valve jobs, engine rebuilds, etc. before calling me in for a second opinion. I'd just unbolt the exhaust at the manifold and tell them to start it up and give it some throttle - Vroom! There's your problem Mister.

this video is a complete waste of time, when he says he is doing it this way because you wont have to spend the time hooking up a vacuum gauage, but hooks up all his fancy testing crap, it takes less than four minutes to test with a vacuum gauage, he's worried about going over his quote, he spent well over an hour testing, then doesn't think its correct, pulls the o2 sensor out that he didn't want to. when all he needed was a vacuum gauage, that he has?

the fact that you didn; t trust your data is what makes you such a great mechanic! I'm having an issue I wish you could deal with right now honestly p0420 I cant afford cats and am hoping it is o2 sensors but I don't have a scan tool to do any testing. I could use the temp test but I have one of the chevy 2. 4 motors with the oil burning issue and had that fixed by top end rebuild a year or so ago but the car has been fine till today.

I will probably get flamed for this, but I would have rather seen you show us how to diagnose a plugged up exhaust without the fancy gizmos that a normal backyard guy doesnt have. I would have preferred something mechanical or visual inspection tip to figure out a plugged exhaust system. This video, for an average wrencher like me was not informative and way over my head. Pls keep it simpler.

When exhaust from the pipe wouldn't blow out a birthday candle; rearranging the spark plug wires during half time and petroleum jelly on the wipers could make for a long ride home. Backfiring through the muffler usually blew it to small pieces so the back pressure returned to normal. The un-burned gas left in the exhaust was used to help keep the valves at a lower operating temperature.

First time I had this type of issue I covered the basics with a tune up. Mazda 323 would run for a second or two then stall. While sitting down trying figure out what this could possibly be I heard a tiny whistle coming out of the rear tail pipe one minute after fail start attempt. Theres your problem lady! Loosened the exhaust manifold, fired right up. New muffler ran like a champ.

F Y I, Jerry rig comes from World War II. During World War II that Germans were called Jerrys and the British were Tommys. The German military towards the end was falling apart. Soldiers would find vehicles that were barely working and had a lot of improvisation as they over took the German army. The same expression goes for Jerry cans as gas cans.

Hey Mr. O Its Mr. M. again. Just was watching some of your older videos and you asked the question of WHOS JERRY? Well its a slang term for GERMAN so its actually GERRY RIGGING. My family comes from Germany and my grandfather told me that a long time ago. Anywho as always love the videos and keep em coming. Say hi to Mrs O From Me and Mrs M.
