I actually know how the plastic piece of the filler neck ended up on the inside. It happened to me as well. Somebody dropped the fuel tank, most likely to do a fuel pump. When they did that, they didn't remove the filler neck so it got pulled inside of the hole like that. When they put it back together, they got lazy and didn't put it back in right.

Thanks for the video. I am replacing my filler neck in the morning and wanted to know what I was getting into. Sounds like a shady tree mechanics got to it before you did and didn't know what they were looking for as far as the leak. good thing I watched shade tree mechanic as a kid cuz now I really enjoy working on my cars. Thanks for the post

Thanks for the comment 7: 10. I was wondering what the product was. When you used it, there was a lot of glare on the label.
My wife asked me what I was doing, waving the phone around and changing the viewing angle of the screen.

Great video. And on the jury rig. sometimes we're left scratching something in pure wonderment. Although I gotta give out some props, at least they used something to protect the gas filler tube. Makes sense about the gas tank. No wonder that this time she brought it to Super Doc.

My guess as to why it was rigged and didn't hold was, number one wrong mechanic to have in the stable and number 2 being plum lazyness cause if one tried hard enough one could get that neck to hold up some how! Someone just got paid full price to do half a work!

This in the Great White North, i. e. the Snowbelt? 'Cause that strap on the filler tube is exactly what I'd think about doing if I had reason to be under the car anyway. it hangs too low for those of us who get YARDS of snow.

Use NEW SCREWS. I see you reinstalling too many badly rusted screws, nuts, and bolts. It is the only thing about your methods that causes me to doubt the quality of your repairs in some videos.

Why it isn't law that gas tank straps be made from stainless steel is beyond me.
Oil spray your cars people. Krown is the best here in Canada (some locations in the usa too)

Whoever cobbed that up put the perforated strap there to hold the fuel filler neck steady to keep it from banging sthe side of the car, because it was not attached at the fill door end.
