Is this the World's WORST Airline Seat? Colaholiker: On my only flight on a DC-9 (a DC-9 that was called that I mean) I deliberately chose a seat all the way in the back. These aircraft, and this includes at least the earlier Mad Dogs (I think things changed around the MD-88) are full of so many cool sounds. From the roar of the JT8D engines, the 400 Hz whine of the electrical system you can hear all over the plane, especially during announcements down to the whoop-whoop-whoop sound of the igniter coil packs during engine starts. Oh how I miss these days.
My worst seat ever was on a BAe146, with an airline that squeezed 3+3 seats in there. Tall me (195 cm) squeezed between the curvature of the wall and an unfortunate sumo fighter in the middle seat. Fortunately it was a VERY short flight.

Having flown on plenty of lawn darts (Northwest Orient DC-9s back in the 70s and Alaska Airlines MD-82s in the 80s, I can't imagine why one would ever seek one out.
I understand pilots enjoy them as they apparently have an advantageous thrust to weight ratio, but for the passenger there is nothing to get excited about - unless you were on the old noise abatement take-offs out of KSNA back in the day. Those things would leap off the ground like they'd been launched from a carrier!
I've also flown on 727s - Alaska and Mexicana - and used the tail stairs!

Hi Noel, sorry to bother you mate. I was just looking at this trips of yours and I noted that you had an APP converted foreign languages into English by merely focusing your camera on the foreign Text. May I ask wha the name of that APP was please and how much it cost to download? Gee mate; not much luck with the double exposure to the aircraft engine. Maybe it would have been better to sit beside the engine than that noisy kid on Egypt Air. Safe travels mate. Cheers.

I miss the MD-80s and their rather steep powerful take-offs. I have sat in this seat on several SAS flights when they used them back in the days. It isn't the nicest, but the leg and seat room was still fine. The worst seats i have had were the very back row (and again now window) on EasyJet and BA A320s. Very crammed indeed.
Ryanair has atleast one seatrow no direct window on their 737s, though the legroom is still ok

Midwest Express, later named Midwest Airlines, used to fly out of Milwaukee, WI - where I live. They had a fleet of DC9 / MD80 aircraft. They had the galley in the back of the plane, so I was never blessed with the view you experienced. Since I flew on one airline, with one type of airplane, it was strange to hear different sounds on other airplanes when I started to fly on other carriers with other planes.

I flew the same type on a domestic flight within Argentina. Had also a seat next to the engine. I was very lucky that there were some seats available in the front the plane. Sitting almost on the engine was a bit over the top regarding the noise. I could feel the vibration of the jet sound in my body. very, very uncomfortable.

As a kid, i use to fly in DC 9.
The only windows with a vie are at the front, because from the back, first were the engines, then the wings, you just look the sky.
In one fligtht from Mexico city to Cozumel, i was on the back and It behave like a snake with a turbulence. Intersting fligth, i still remember ir.

I am astonished you claim to have never flown on a MD-80-alike. I believe I am your same age and I flew on these endlessly in the 90's and 00's! Was it rare in England? It is wacky to board from the rear stairs. I don't think that was ever done in USA after a particular incident

Last row Air Transat Airbus A330-200. This is a bad row. You can't move. You can't recline. You have to hear the noises from the toilet all the time. Maybe also Wingview rows are the worst, for example A380 where you see nothing but wing. Engines are not that a problem here for sure.

Just wondering do you ever check in online and just do the bag drop? Most N. American airlines have check in 24 hours before. And you can usually choose your seat (sometimes for a fee) but it just seems easier to skip the check in lines, and you can make sure you get a window.

Post-Soviet state. Backwardness and poverty. The UK can be glad, to have stayed out of Soviet Communism. However, the United States of America and the Western powers, pushed Eastern Europe towards Stalin. It's not a tank, it's a BTR 70 type armored personnel carrier.

I always had that awful seat on the MD-80s too. Ive become convinced that they only sell tickets for that one seat. Everyone else on the plane is actually an airline employee and their only job is to make you sit in the worlds worst airline seat.

Hi Noel. I had that very seat on a Fokker 100 from Jersey to Tees-side some years ago. it was very disappointing since we flew out there on a 146-300 and were scheduled to get another one back again, but the Fokker was substituted for some reason.

I remembered flying on an American Airline MD80 from Dallas to DC back in the early 90s having the same seat as yours. The only difference was that it was a very bumpy ride because we were flying in bad weather for almost half of the flight.

There was really nasty fighting between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in Osh back in 2010. Hundreds killed. Got reasonable coverage in international media at the time but then was largely forgotten about outside of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

There's another guy making run across the world like that called ''Bald and bankrupt''. Since he's bald and Brittish to, i thought that was the same person as you but no. However that must be great to work as traveler like that.

The lady in the seat next to you doing her travel report. the flight was okay but the crew really needs to keep a handle on the other passengers, this guy next to me was talking the whole time while I was trying to sleep.

It was a 30 minute flight. I am sure a lovely experienced travel buff like yourself coped with no view out the window. 30 minutes lol. Christ Noel, that's the average time of most of my longer lasting relationships.

Noel Im lucky enough to have flown on a handful of MAD DOGS and as keen spotter I too had that wonderful view of the engine nacelle on a TWA a/c from LAX to STL not good spotting! Missed an awful lot of aircraft

Love the MD-80 my favorite plane and flown on forever with American Airlines. It you want to ride on one look at World Atlantic Airlines, they only fly MD-80 are a US airline and you are guaranteed to be on one.
