Don't forget to come to Calistoga when you're in Northern California. I'm a massage therapist here and I love it, it's very, very beautiful. Go out hiking, bike riding, wine tasting, etc and have yourself a mud bath or soak in the hot springs and then have a relaxing massage. And down the road in St. Helena there's the culinary institute where you can have a 5 star meal. There are also many restaurants here in town that serve a variety of excellent food, my favorite being the high quality and authentic Mexican food.
One of the best parts of my job here, besides just being in such a beautiful and relaxing place, is that I get to meet people from all over the world.
Also, thank you for the fire warning. A lot of people here have severe PTSD when it comes to fire and the least you'll get is severely chastized if you're not careful with fire and other incendiary items.

California is long in the North-South direction. The north is lush, green and forested. The further south you go the drier and hotter it gets.
In terms of East-West, the East is hotter and the west is colder because it's higher.
The other thing is chose your road wisely. I wanted to travel from San Diego to Bakersfield and made the poor choice of trying to drive through L. A. Totally failed trip. The solution, find a road that runs parallel to your path but a bit further east and you'll have no problem. Worked for me.
California is a great place, enjoyed it, but don't forget the language issues. The further south you go the more Spanish is spoken until English doesn't exist. Can be a problem.

I once made the mistake of going to SoCal hi-desert without a coat and warm clothes during December/January. Big mistake, don't do it. I had three layers of clothes on plus my bed-spread just to go outside for a smoke. Having been in Norcal and SoCal both in June/July/August in cities that border the ocean front from San Francisco to San Diego, along with the morning sea fog that rolls in during the night that hangs around until usually 9/10am is pretty chilly especially up north. Take a coat or heavy sweater along even in summer months because the foggy mornings near the coast can be quite nippy.

Just one comment try to avoid San Francisco altogether, it hs been rate by their own journal The San Francisco Chronicle asthe tudest and most unfriendly city in America. I know I have lived several years there. Its VERY expensive and just plain like Zombieland! Now in fairness I would say that about 10% are friendly and the nicest people one can meet, but for the most part 90% seems to be the norm, rude and unfriendly.

Yep, definitely did & still do call San Francisco, San Fran or California, Cali sometimes. At least when I'm outside California. Not going to change it either.
Traffic in LA was the worst I've ever experienced.
However, they have the best national parks.

#1: dont go to Compton; #2: stay away from the homeless. you wont be able to, but try; #3: always carry your papers because you will be arrested or at least beaten. unless your homeless, then you can do whatever you want; #4: dont bother buying weed. its legal to buy but you cant smoke it anywhere. socialist laws make a lot of sense; #5: be forewarned, you may have to pay a departure tax, which is a % of all assets you own and then some you dont

Lived in Sacramento all my life. Fair warning regarding what he said about the access to nature. Although its very easy to go out into nature and by beautiful places like the American river, always keep in mind that the homeless problem is hugely prevalent. Youll find entire camps made of tarps and tents. You could step on a hypodermic needle walking on the beach. Its always smart to be weary in these kinds of places.

Don't fly into SFO or LAX if you don't have to, there are tons of airports in the state that are less of a hassle. I personally use Oakland or Long Beach.
Also, Berkeley is the name of the city itself, not to be used shorthand for the university like you would for the other UCs. The University is Cal, always has been, always will be. The T-Shirts and Hoodies say Cal for a reason.

Hella is more valley & SoCal talk. SoCal is also far more plastic. Yes, Im from SC, a beach town, in NorCal. & our beaches are totally surf-able. Checkout some surfing movies, Santa Cruz is awesome. Well it was better when I was young, now its all going down hill because of bad city & state leadership.
Lastly, go to Lake Tahoe! Its the best non-beach thing you can do.

Best chance to see a celebrity is on Melrose, check out Santa Barbara-Solvang great wine, Redwoods are a must see and Mammoth Lakes. If you're camping, black bears/mountain lions are a thing so be on the lookout
