Don't take a photo with the character performers in Times Square unless you are prepared to pay. They are not there as a free service. They will expect a tip.
Don't only stay in Manhattan. I have saved a ton of money on hotels by staying in Queens and Brooklyn. This leads into number 2.
Don't be afraid of the Express trains. Learn how to use them, they make using the subway MUCH easier. Especially if you are staying in Brooklyn or Queens and want to go to Manhattan, express trains are going to make life much easier for you.
Don't forget about Governor's Island. It's a beautiful, and free, excursion you can take. The ferry also gives some great views of downtown. It's only open during summer though.
I agree about Times Square though. Yes it's super touristy, but it's worth seeing if only to say you've seen it.

personally, id say to avoid the yellow cab taxis. i live in new jersey and visit nyc a lot, and the taxis are super overpriced compared to walk + public transit. ny has the best public transit (not cleanest but most widespread) in the country so take advantage of it and apps like google maps and apple maps have built in transit modes to help you navigate around the city even better. (with that also comes another dont-- dont wear shoes you'd wear to the beach. bring good walking shoes you'd hike with because nyc and walking are synonymous with each other and it's the reason it is one of the least obese/overweight cities in the country)

I hope that all New York residents please forgive me. My first impression of New York City, is that it must be a horrible place to live. I just recently visited it for the first time. In my opinion, the life there seems to be very stressful, with very little privacy. I also believe that the quality of life in NYC is a tremendous downgrade in comparison to many places throughout the United States. In my opinion, it makes no sense to pay expensive prices to rent a one room apartment, when one can pay the same price for a mortgage of a nice spacious home in other states.

I like your very first don't stopping in the middle of a busy sidewalk to take a picture or gawk at another tall building haha. I can't stress how much of an annoyance that is when you have limited time to get somewhere. Personally, yes I'm a New Yorker but I also love travelling so I watched this video as a test to see how accurate this was. It's spot on in case anyone's wondering! Just as a side note NYC is horrendously expensive as is and people will over charge tourist -so look for free or the good deals whenever possible

About 98% of the time do not speak to anyone who speaks to you! Most likely they have identified you as a tourist or are trying to figure it out and will try to get money or scam you. In very unfortunate circumstances, it can become dangerous. People are very insistent sometimes, so watch your back! Speaking from experience and years of living in NYC. Also, please let the people off the train before you get onperiodt.

Went to New York on a tour bus and from my experience It was a mix of good and bad. I stayed at a hotel in New Jersey and bused my way into NYC. The food is great and loved Central Park. I've learned quickly don't make eye contact with random people or they will try to sell you something. I have an understanding why New Yorkers can be rude. They have to be to many scams.

When friends visit my city I don't at all mind if they ask me to see the sights with them. It's the only time
I usually visit them as a local. Maybe just run it past your local friends and see how they feel rather than presuming that they will or won't want to.
Totally agree with you about needing good walking shoes though!

#14: DONT! Make fun of the New York Accent! People both in and outside of the city hate it when you do a New York accent. Not everyone talks like that, its just plain rude. Its like going up to a English man and doing an English accent. Just not nice and rude. ( I actually cant believe you missed that. )
