Detroit, Michigan - A City on the Rise Sanders Chocolate Shoppe
HOT FUDGE SUNDAE
Detroit, Michigan
When I first visited Detroit in 1954 my stepmom would take me downtown every Monday - the beauticians day off. I rode in front of a bus for the first time and got my first tour of Detroit as the Russell Street bus shook, rattled and rolled through the Motor City ghetto before stopping in skid row on the fringes of downtown Detroit.
[I was glad we lived in a well-kept integrated neighborhood on Fleming between 6 Mile Road and Nevada where my dad organized a block club to keep our block looking good. He also organized a neighborhood softball team but I struck out too much to make him stick out his chest with pride. Within 3 years - by 1957 - white flight took off as white neighbors on the block fled to suburbs leaving only black families and the old white woman next door who refused to move despite pressure from her daughter Barbara. ]
Chris and I would spend the entire day window shopping and exploring shops and stores like Hudsons, Crowleys and Kerns. Along the way we would stop by Hudson childrens shoe department to say hello to Aunt Martha who was the only black sales clerk I ever saw in the gigantic store. After an exhausting day of exploring downtown Detroit Chris always treated me to a double feature at the second-run Family Theater and a hot fudge sundae at Sanders. There - in that super cool basement - I got hooked for life. (I even order the caramel online today) Sanders was also the first lunch counter I had ever sat down with white people.
Once I learned how to navigate the Motor City on my own I always had to stop by Sanders Deli serving the best hot fudge sundae in the world made with real caramel (not chocolate. after taking in a movie at the elegant Fox or another downtown movie theater dad said were too expensive. but I went anyway for the first-run movies, the gallon tubs of hot buttered popcorn and giant cokes and Hershey bars. and for, of course, the sheer grandeur which was light years away from Orlandos Carver Theater for colored people.

Despite its persistent serious problems, Detroit is still one of the best cities in the US. It is a historic architectural treasure chest that contains the world’s third largest collection of historic older skyscrapers built before 1930. It has beautiful radial thoroughfares and a very impressive waterfront. It has a world class art museum and beautiful parks. The people are very friendly and down to earth. It has all the professional sports and it is a major music and entertainment hub. I always wanted to come and visit Detroit and spend some time exploring this interesting historic city. Many of my family, relatives, and friends felt that I needed psychiatric help for listing Detroit as one of my favorite cities however I ignored their negative ignorant opinions since most of them are either scared of Detroit or just hate the city for no apparent reason. I hope that Detroit continues on its path of revitalization and economic diversification.

As a Detroit resident, Detroit has it’s really good and it’s really bad. Yes, Downtown is beautiful even though I miss the old Greektown which as known as trappers alley.
City services are terrible, you always have to watch your back in Detroit, I’ve never been robbed but known many that have and you can get robbed anywhere in the city if a thief wants to get you they will,
Car insurance is a MF in Detroit,
We got food that slaps on both West or East. The Eastside is more cut throat, and the Westside tries to be more slick.

Detroit Michigan a city on the rise are you kidding me friends we're telling me they drove through Detroit to get down in the city for something and to get there was a disgrace how the people are living because you have Democrats running the city they need to start taking care of the other part of the city and help the people she said that it was a disgrace how those people had to live what a shame because of these crooked rotten Democrats who run the city they sat in their pockets and they don't give a damn about the people

Your joking of course, not in my life time or yours. Tampa media gives yourself away, you show a protected 3 mile area center to the city. You show neither the abandoned sky scrappers or the miles and miles of surrounding destroyed homes, strip clubs and crack houses. YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH! And uncle Joe and Kamel crap are busy working to do the same to the rest of the country unless people wake up. Dont believe me jsut pick any recent YOU -TUBE VIDEO on a tour of DETROIT. Not your PROPAGANDA

Detroit failed as it was the first city to experiment with sprawling suburbs. Those suburbs cost way more to maintain than the tax revenue received and bankrupted the city. Look up Strong Towns, it’s a problem all over America in Canada.
That’s why they are redeveloping the downtown, as it’s the area that is actually profitable for the city. Detroit should serve as a warning for other cities, however I am happy to see it’s doing better!

it's crazy to see how much better it's been getting over the years, i remember when i was a kid i used to get so nervous going to bell isle or walking around greektown with my ma or dad. now as a grown man in my 20's, every time i have been able to come back and visit i am in awe. such a gorgeous city with beautiful people!

I've always knew Detroit would eventually make a comeback! My last visit was around 2005. My first was in 1977 when it was booming. I am certain that it still has a long way to go, especially in the residential areas. There are miles of abandoned and dilapidated communities and structures but thanks to the entrepreneurs and investors, there is hope! Hats off to those who stayed behind and endured through it all.

hello Randy, it's been 2 years since you posted the video, I just saw it now. The city of Detroit looks good, yet the media continue to tarnish its image (delinquency, unemployment, insecurity. During the crisis, the European media gave a very bad image of the city. they even showed houses sold for a symbolic dollar.

Detroit has endured decades of political and social chaos and irreverence. Fast forward to 2021 and its steady resurgence is very refreshing. I can know experience the vibrant culture told to me in stories from family in my early youth.

Detroit was the Paris of America. It needs to focus on the neighborhoods around the city. Detroit deserves to be a awesome city again. I know All the neighborhoods. Proud to grow up in the Detroit area.

It would decades of record job growth to comeback, thousands and thousands of jobs were lost here in the auto industry alone! Home brew bars and candle shops are not sustainable growth for a comeback!

I have lived outside of Detroit, and let me tell you that it is pure shit. The size of the downtown core is smaller than a city map in a Grand Theft Auto game.
