He Ate ONLY McDonalds For 30 Days. And Got Shredded

Can you lose weight eating only junk It sounds ridiculous, but we decided to put it to the test. For the next 30 days, I’ve convinced Brendan, my videographer, to eat only Mcdonalds every day to see if a weight loss diet that works really is as simple as calories in, calories out. Or, if the McDonald’s diet has consequences on his body and health that I never could’ve expected. To see the McDonalds diet effect on Brendan, he’ll not only be doing a DEXA scan to measure his body fat and muscle mass, but we’re also conducting pre and post-blood tests. We’ll also be testing Brendan’s strength before and after the experiment to give us another way to assess if he’s lost any of his hard-earned muscle and strength. Click below to try the BWS app for free for 2 weeks, no strings attached: Click below to subscribe for more videos: Follow Dr. Layne Norton: But for now, it’s time to create a McDonald’s diet plan that'll help him lose weight. Based on Brendan’s current weight, he’ll need to eat a daily target of 2000 calories. But to avoid losing muscle and ending up weaker after the 30 days, he’ll also need to hit a bare minimum of 120 grams of protein. But Dr. Layne Norton explains that the diet may get monotonous after a while, which reduces satisfaction and adherence. So, using Layne’s advice, the meal plan I made for Brendan consists of 3 meals and 2 snacks per day. But rather than locking him into a strict meal plan, I gave him a few different options for each meal. He’ll be logging everything into our new BuiltWithScience app. So, as long as he stays within his daily calorie and protein targets, he can modify the meals however he likes. However, as it turns out, not every healthy meal option I selected for his Mcdonald’s weight loss diet was available in Canada. So, he had to start getting creative  like making his own salad out of his wrap. Brendan also started complaining about his racing heart. Honestly, though, I don’t think Brendan’s racing heart has much to do with his new diet. That's because he’s not only been drinking extra coffee to help with his hunger, but he’s also pretty nervous about what this diet might do to his health. Almost every item on the McDonald’s item is full of saturated fat, highly refined, and stripped of pretty much everything that makes them good. As a result, aside from sodium, he’s not even close to getting even just 50% of most of his recommended nutrients every day. On day 5, Brendan shared 2 common problems he ran into while eating McDonalds every day. He doesn't always get the order he requests, which means more calories. And he’s having some. well, difficulties in the toilet. The recommended fiber intake for Brendan is about 35 grams a day. On his McDonald’s meal plan, however, he’s getting less than a third of this, barely reaching 10 grams daily. The blockage he’s experiencing has definitely made accurately tracking his weight loss a lot more difficult than anticipated. While Brendan was blaming his lack of progress on his low fiber intake, I wasn’t fully convinced. So I did some deeper investigation. and I came up with 2 reasons for why Brendan couldn’t lose weight eating only junk despite supposedly being in a calorie deficit. First, Mcdonald’s was severely under-reporting the calorie contents of their food. Second, the body absorbs more calories from a highly processed diet than a less processed one. So, with Brendan’s heavily processed diet, he may not be in the calorie deficit we initially thought he was, especially with the hidden calories that McDonald’s doesn’t seem to take into account. Which means no more butter on his breakfast sandwiches and no sauces on his wraps and burgers. So, what was the Mcdonalds diet effect on Brendan after 30 days Overall, Brendan managed to gain 2 extra reps on his bench and pull-ups, and matched his deadlift strength although he forgot to wear wrist straps, limiting his strength. As for his blood work, The main things we’re looking for are his cholesterol levels, his HbA1c, which is the best blood marker for diabetes, his inflammation levels, and his liver health. Normally, all of these would be negatively impacted by a junk food diet. But what actually happened Nothing. All his blood work stayed pretty much the same, which is surprising. It turns out weight loss alone is a major health booster and can balance out the negative effects you’d expect from a nutrient-deprived, junk food diet. Which now begs the question. What actually happened to Brendan’s weight, fat, and muscle mass After only eating McDonald’s for 30 days, Brendan dropped 5lbs on the scale, lost three cm off his waistline and according to the results of his DEXA scan. dropped from 23% body fat percentage to 22% BF. Ultimately, this shows fat loss really is a numbers game.

Simply being in a deficit doesn't work for me as my natural state is a deficit, only combining it with cardio actually loses fat. I know that's weird lol. I'm just not a big eater, me being on a diet is actually trying to eat more to feed my muscles for gains, and while doing that with a second lunch I'm now at around 1800 cals. Before I started doing that my regular everyday non-diet cals were under 1500, at that point weight just stays the same. With higher calories and strength training I put on lean weight fat stays the same, with higher calories and strength training plus cardio lose fat (I just did this for 3 weeks and lost 2kg) while still seeing great strength and lean size gains, making it perfect but a big time investment at 2. 5 hours every day 6 days a week.
I've never been takeout averse, I specifically don't like mcdonalds but most places aren't inherently unhealthy at all, the problem is it's just so damn expensive, way way more expensive than making your own food. So once every two weeks is all we can afford anyway.

Hey Jeremy, I am using Macrofactor right now and I would consider your app but the promise of taking a picture of your email and then having it be estimated accurately just sounds a little too good to be true (not hating. Could yoyu maybe do a video where you make the comparison between your computer vision model and actually weighing out all the ingredients and then maybe also offer some tips on how to get the best estimate (I imagine lighting and image quality are giant contributors. I can understand if you're uncomfortable doing so now as I am sure you are improving the model vastly now that there are actual users, but maybe you can do it in the future

Well the thing is, you simply don't get enough quantifiable food for the amount of calories that McDonalds orders give you. I feel hungry when I lack the AMOUNT of food, not the calories. If I lack the calories. I'll probably feel sleepy, not hungry. This is part of the reason why unprocessed foods are simply better. Another part is that their carbohydrates are complex, so your body actually uses up energy (measured in calories) to break up the carbohydrate molecules into simpler ones. Meanwhile, the sugars in processed foods are, well, processed, and thus require no energy to break apart, increasing the amount of training you have to go through daily.

I’m worried people will draw the wrong conclusions from this experiment (or any other short-term diet. We should always be thinking long term with our nutrition plan, and I guarantee you that anything resembling this approach is incredibly unhealthy. (Which is why most people on the standard American diet are unhealthy)
Also: there’s more to nutrition than protein!
That being said, appreciate your work, Jeremy!

anabolicGeek said it best, but yes. when you are in a caloric deficit, what you eat doesn't matter.
however I would like to see how bad his bloodwork looked after the 30 days of mcdonalds since mcdonalds is nothing but fake food not meant for human consumption (fake beef fries fried in reused fats.
there's a very real reason why Brian Johnson wants McDonalds (and other fake food chains) to go out of business.

egg mcmuffin: english muff 150, 1/2 tbsp butter 50, egg (in grease) 90, ham 40, cheese 60 = 390 (call it 400. that's how i count them. i do that with all fast food. i've taken stuff apart and weighed it, and done macros based on the bun, mayo, meat etc. they are allowed to be 20% off by law (and they usually are) subway is very accurate, but add your own mayo, oil etc

This video doesn't seem genuine, it seems a sneaky McDonald advertisement. In general I like your content a lot and it absolutely helped me. But some of your recent videos sound to include stronger monetary incentives. You had a video saying bad things about AG1 and at the same time you have an (overall) pretty positive video about McDonald.

You can definitely loose fat while eating like shit. a guy i went to college with. Would eat only carbs and fat with small amount of protein. his favorite meal. Coolaid and oreos. he was an endurance runner. He didnt really care about muscle. He couldnt bench his body weight. But he could run a 10k in under 34min.

the app is good, but it needs some new features added. When I first started, I only wanted to go to the gym 4 days a week. Now I want to go 5 days a week and I cannot add that to my current workout program. I will lose all the data if I create a new 5 day workout week program, which is not great. please add this!

How do you explain all the people on keto and carnivore diets consuming relatively high caloric diets but eating very low carbs and no processed foods maintaining shredded bodies (and exercising) I'm one of those with great metabolic numbers as well. The calories in calories out model doesn't work here at all!

Jeremy I am your app user now I've few questions here for you
1. If mcdonalds labels were incorrect how did he do calorie counting correctly
2. I checked with support to add fiber in total daily count but they said it isn't possible.
Hoping you could respond back on it. Else i am also going to Jeff

Having grown up in rural south of France i've always eaten local unprocessed products like meat fruits and vegetables. Some people call them organic we call them normal. People don't count calories over here. People don't diet either. We just eat real food simply because that's the food we have.

WAIT, WHAT McDonalds has grilled chicken still I haven't seen that in a long time. Oh wait, are you in Canada Where they still have grilled chicken on the menu. Apparently, us fatties in the U. S. didn't order enough grilled chicken, so it was discontinued here. Let's all chant U. S. A, U. S. A.

Guys, everyone's body fat distribution is different, but most people's body fat in the stomach is the last to go. This isn't the case for Brendan, that's why he looks so lean and has visible abs at 23% body fat. And DEXA has an error margin of about 1-2% so its possible he is at 21-25% body fat

Fun video and informational. (Also a bit misinformational. The app is nowhere near that accurate with the food scanner ) he's talking about energi. I eat very well and according to all guidelines. i am still so tired i can barely get out of bed and my workouts take double the time it should

With what we know about ultra processed and deep fried foods these experiments are simply unethical at this point because they knowingly harm the person. What’s especially sad is that we’re not learning any new science, this was purely for content and views. What a shame.

Warp double chicken extra cucumber is a little bit cheating. :-) The problem is all the carb, sugar and bad oil in processed bread, fries, sauce and drink. And the fact that you’ll probably be hungry if you eat low calory diet, with only high calories industrial food.

Hej Mate, it's the 4th week that I am following your instructions. I lost 3. 5 kgs (sorry for the bloody European metric) my body fat % went down 1. 8 and muscle up 2%. I am planning to go for 3 months. Hopefully drop something like 8-10 kg.
You are great!

blood results are not going to change immediately and not always with the same sensitivity. there are genetic and other factors involved. but junk food is junk - it may be stored and processed one way or the other, but it will always have negative effects.
