Big Back - Big Biceps (BIG MISTAKES)

If you want to build a big, wide back and sleeve splitting biceps you have a lot of options but one of my all time favorite moves that hits them BOTH at the same time is the weighted chin up! With this single back and biceps exercise you can stimulate hypertrophy in both your lats and your biceps at the same time. In this video I-ll show you the proper loading parameters, rep ranges and techniques to add mass, strength and power to your upper body pulling without having to resort to split muscle group training. Many people know about the power of the chin-up in building back and biceps but since it-s a -bodyweight- move, they tend to overlook one very important element; the ability to load. Once you are able to perform sets of 12, 15, or even 20 reps on the chin up you need to start adding some weight to continue to elicit the proper response for strength and size. If not, those super high rep sets start turning the move into an endurance challenge which is fine; but not what we want when our goal is increased biceps or back mass. From a biomechanics stand point the chin up puts your shoulder in front of your body so not only are you getting a better lat stretch but you-re also getting the protective effect on the shoulder joint when it is elevated (as in the bottom of the chin up) as opposed to the abducted end point of a pull up. Make sure you squeeze your biceps at the top of the movement, even if it means lowering the weight that you-re able to use, if you want to put them on overload and create increased biceps size. As you will see, I-m weighting my chins with over half my bodyweight for the heavy sets (around 90 lbs) but it-s important to make sure you respect form, and full range of motion to get the most out of this move. As always never let your ego dictate your loading parameters. When you put it all together you have a one two punch that can quickly kick start your back and biceps development. Add this into your pull day and you will see results fast. As always, you can get a complete workout program to start looking like an athlete by heading to and getting your ATHLEAN-X Training System. See what the top pros are using to build biceps, back and a complete athletic body in just 90 days

Hi Jeff wanted to thank you. I have been watching your vids for some time, they really helped me add variety to my weight routine, but your constant hammering of getting nutrition right is what was the key for me. I had been stuck in the 230s on a good, whole foods keto diet for about a year (I started at close to 300lbs and lost most of that in 6mos doing strict keto, and with your advice about diet, I changed it up just a little bit. I added more vegetables and more water, granted the vegetables are drown in butter/salt/cheese with some lean chicken on top now and again. In the last month and a half I've dropped from 236 to 220 and I'm still losing weight. Also, I increased my intensity with the change in diet, and have been losing a steady 0. 2lbs or so per day. I still have more to lose but I'm currently in the best shape and weight I've been in 20 years, my blood pressure is down, etc. So thanks for all your videos!

400 Challenge question
A bit of a random question here about the 400 challenge sinc eI cant find an official video about it. I have done the AX1 once and I am doing it again. I know I have room for growth but these guy posting 4-5 minutes time. I'll go out on a limb and say they are bogus times. I have seen videos of guy doing 7-8 minutes and even they don't have the best form with complete reps.
1. Has anyone seen a Video from Jeff on this showing his times and form?
2. Has anyone done any of these crazy times and posted a video? I will gladly eat my words and give you props.
3. Has anyone seen a Video from Jeff on this showing calling people out?

THIS WORKED
I do this exercise twice a week. I usually do it every day but has slowed down. Anyways I do 6 sets. First with heavy weight then jumps down. Choose the right amount of weight to add. I use a backpack to put my weights in. Go with something that maxes you out at around 10 reps, then go down. And second set should still be around 10 reps. If not that-s fine, do this for a few days and you will max out at 10 reps very quickly. After set two continue body weight exercises until set six. The numbers will look small at first, but make sure they increase and you-ll see results. (eat properly and eat a lot)

Jeff,
I'm trying to do two things right now:
Burn fat and put on muscle. (Cut/bulk. My question is - what order should I do it in? Should I bulk first and then cut because the higher muscle mass will allow me to burn fat faster? Or should I cut first because the lower amount of body fat will make it easier to train my muscles? Or should I, as difficult as it is, do both at once?
Any help is appreciated.

He is 100% right on this video. My back and especially my biceps where at their best a couple of years back when I was training them exclusively with bodyweight pull-up variations. After 4 months in, I remember looking at my biceps and was amazed by how much their peak had increased and I did no isolation curls whatsoever, although I think some isolated work will definitely help.

I currently weigh 215 and have longer arms. So calisthenic pulling movements are harder for me. I felt good doing 5x5 weighted chins w/45lbs attached.
Then I see Jeff bang out 6 reps with 90lbs attached. LOL Granted he weighs less but still. beastly shit! However I've always preferred the chinup over the pullup for the reasons he stated.

Jeff, can you make a video commenting on other calisthenics exercises? You have discussed the muscle-up and the front lever. Could you make a video about the back lever, one arm handstand, one arm pullup, hollow back handstand, etc. You do not have to be able to do these to address whether they are safe movements. Thanks.

Hey Jeff! Love your content. Its been a huge help. And the best part is its free! I also listen/follow MMA trainer Mike Dolce. In a recent podcast he mentioned reaching out to you to join him for a conversation. I think you two have many similar principals, and together would make an awesome conversation.

Hey Jeff's can you make a video about which muscle to used in order to lift a heavy object(box) all the way up because when ask other people how they can lift that heavy object without effort they just said I don't know I just lift it up, i mean is all the strenght in your forearms or just in your biceps?
