we will also learn how to paint conveniently by using the pressure sensitivity of your Wacom Tablets Phillip: I have been desaturating lately using the Black and White adjustment. I tried comparing using HSL, Black and White and Solid color with Color Blend mode. Can't really tell which is the best but Black and white still seems to give the best results for desaturating. And it has the advantage of being modified with the opacity slider to give images a beautiful soft pastel look to the colors if you reduce that opacity. Your thoughts would be much appreciated

This is wonderful! Very detailed which I appreciate. However, it would be helpful if there was a simplified step-by-step text guide to go with it. Since it is 18 minutes long, it would be helpful to have the written steps to refer to after we watch the video, as we are trying on our own too. Otherwise it is a lot of stop - start action to replay the video in between trying out each step. Any chance such a document already exists?

Thank you so much for this tutorial! Today is what would have been my father's 75th birthday, but he passed away 10 years ago. The only picture I have of him is a picture of his high school yearbook photo that my sister took on her phone. it had a pretty bad shadow over his face from where her phone/hand got in the light. Thanks to your tutorial I was able to restore the photo to more or less its original quality!

This is a fake shade, the shade from the sun is always sharp regardless of the distance of the hand. It's the first thing, the second, no one stands in front of her, we can see it in the reflection of her eye.
Sorry, I respect your work but this. try real shade to correct, I know. it can, I tried but it's a lot harder.
I wish you all the best in your future work.

This could save me big time. I managed to fail epic as my photos have horizontal split shadows on their faces on the event that I covered as the sun is hitting the tent cover of the stage casting shadows on my subjects faces. The upper part is dark while the lower part of their faces are bright. So I will try this and hopefully it will work on my photos

It's a masterful technique. but when you have a shadow blending from light to dark, over several colors. boy it's really tough to make it work, I seem to have lost all the texture in the skin along the way.
Edit: actually it's because there was not texture in those dark shadows to begin with, so no fault of the technique

This looks amazing, and the method seems to work for everyone else, but I get stuck when I try to invert the Curves Adjustment layer mask (Select > Inverse or Shift + Cntl + I in Windows, i. e. 'Inverse' is greyed out. Would anyone know how I can fix this, please? Thanks so much.

Im trying to do this but its not working as well. Is it possible my shadows are just to dark to fix? Im taking a picture of our audio products. They have aluminum faceplates with aluminum knobs. The shadows under them are really black. Is there another way, or is it just too dark?

Figured out something, Desaturation also functions the same as solid color with blend mode color, just set forth the blend mode of hue/sat adjusment or vibrance adjustment from normal to color too, it ensues identical outcome as the solid color with color blend mode

I get to the mask part where you start painting, but the brush is not dark enough to cancel the shadow. And even when i use the same brush settings, the paint isnt intensified when I make multiple strokes over the same area. How would I fix this?

I love your tutorials but you move too fast for someone to follow along that is just learning. I've rewatched several points in your videos to follow step-by-step but gave up. I'll leave the shadow in I guess.

Hi Unmesh, I tried doing a frequency separation and with a mixer brush tool, drag the normal brightness skin area into the shadows under the ''Low Frequency'' layer and it works better. The details stays too.
reply

First of all very nice tutorial. Learning a lot from u. After removing shadows. Can't we do frequency separation for fixing colours? As in that method we have full control of skin tones and texture.

This method dont seem to work for me because the aluminum has grain then needs to be matched. If I select the color next to it, it matched but its a a color with no texture.
reply

The right way to use desaturation is to use it in Color mode, not in Normal. And the same thing when you work with brightness, use Luminosity mode.

Or, and I'm just gonna blue-sky this, stop holding your hand in front of your light source. It will improve your work flow no end.

I need to make the oposite. To remove a stain, which is brighter, in the pic. not a shadow. How does this technique work?
