Thank you for the video. I would like to build a Freenas. I have some old parts I can use. Here are my choices: One; G3220, DDR3 16GB non ECC 1600Mhz, GA-81M-S2H. Choice two; Pentium G4500, DDR4 8GB non ECC 2400Mhz, GA-H110M-A. Final choice; i5-3330T, DDR3 16GB (Same memory as above.), Dell 7010 SFF motherboard (no OEM case). I'll be using for boot a Corsair 60GB SSD and one 2TB HD for storage. I want this setup to be simple where a few family members can get files from me, mostly home videos, documents, pictures & maybe stream music. The case I have for the two newer boards is a convenient small cube. The Dell board will use a mid-tower case and I'll have to figure something for the power switch plus the case is big and heavy. Not thrilled with that case. Which of these possible setup would be best or will any of them be suitable. Been using my Netgear router's USB port to do this but it's painfully slow. Also, max HD size is 1TB. I'm not too concern about loosing the data, since I have everything backup on a couple of external USB drives. Perhaps a Pre-build would be easier but, what's the fun in that? Not to mention that I already have all those parts available. Plus when I read reviews on those lower end Pre-builds NAS the common theme seem to be -SLOW-. Anyway, all I need is to learn from scratch FreeNas, how hard can it be? LOL Any input would be appreciated.

I was looking at storage options because I'm looking at building a 3-4 node ESXI Cluster and I want shared storage. When I look at the synology page where you put in the IOPS you want, it recommends me solutions that are $8k plus. The NAS would just be my data-store, and I'm only talking about 5-10 high IO vms plus maybe another 10-15 lower IO VMs running on the cluster off of the storage solution. I currently have an Unraid box that's setup as my NAS/docker system, and I don't plan to touch that since it's just working, but also doesn't have the performance necessary to be my VM datastore for my new ESXI cluster. I currently have a dual xeon custom built 4U rack box that I just build with 128GB ECC DDR3. I'm wondering if using FreeNAS if I could use that box to build a solution that would meet my IO needs. Any advice?
Edit: Forgot to say, for overall usable capacity, I'd want around 2-4TB of High IO storage for the VM datastore, and then maybe 8-16TB usable capacity of lower performance storage that could be for backups or other filesharing type use. I could initially just have the High IO storage and use my current Unraid box for backups.

been running a Freenas server for 5 years now in my garage on a lower end PC with 4-2tb WD drives and 8gb and have zero issues with file integrity on it accessing or using. It can be a little daunting to setup at first with permissions for access and setting up a jail for Plex (others available ). Currently running 9.3 , yes i know there are newer versions but the old adage if it ain't broke.....

I had a qnap with 8 drives. Cost was about 3000 usd with drives. Last week is the second time it went down an expect me to re-format. So no. I-m building a new pc with truenas and hopefully I can rescue some data from qnap

I wouldn't bother with freenas, get a proper NAS, more reliable, lower power, better hybernation, easier to set up etc. Basic 4 bay synology's are around $120 on eBay.

One key question I have about freenas. Can I expand a zfs pool by adding or replacing drives and still maintain redundancy?
