My main client-base is elderly and this would be waaaay too much for that audience. For your grandma/grandpa using Win 10, there's always SyncToy. It's a bit weird to set up, but you can then put a shortcut on her desktop for them. All they need to do is plug in the external USB HDD and click the shortcut to run the back-up, as needed, then safely remove the drive. I know this is really simplistic compared to this video, but it's easy for the oldies. xx

FreeNAS is great if you have the RAM. For those of us who don't have that money, or that type of -old- computer, try out Open Media Vault.
In my mind, out of 10? FreeNAS 8, OMV 9, UnRAID 5, Synology / QNap 2, Real Linux / BSD server 25! ... Windows FS ... -100.
OMV has it all, software RAID, HW RAID, BTRFS, ZFS, XFS, EXT4, MergerFS, etc. It's all in there.

I like using rclone to mount cloud services as network drives and using them like any other folder. Great for quick drag and drop backups of specific folders. I just recently set up a nextcloud server but I haven't really deployed it yet for my whole home. Not too familiar with sonology. Maybe you can do a video on the pros and cons of each setup.

pssst... ZFS IS software raid, not kinda... that is why you need an HBA card and not a RAID card for ZFS. Just saying.... around the 27:30 mark... face palm... also the reason why need a lot of memory for ZFS...

I've been using XigmaNAS for a few years. I have it loaded on an old company server with 4 2TB drives. It's based on FreeBSD. I haven't had a single problem with it.

Chris, thank you for taking the time to put this together. I missed the live feed but you managed to include a lot of really useful information in this video.

What about Clonezilla ? I's so easy to create a full image of my laptop from time to time, so I have always a solution in case of ramsomware for example.

-I hate laptops-. Me too. I hate ASUS too though, how they sold defect 5700 XT graphics cards is outrageous, I never buy anything from ASUS in the future.

For windows, is 'Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition' worth it? Any other backup software worth mention? Thank you! Love your content btw :)
