Don't use Mac or Windows... use Linux and I breakdown my entire process and how I am able to produce so many YouTube videos and cut my edit times by a considerable portion. Have you taken a look at Lightworks? I looked into davinci resolve but decided it was not quite what i was looking for. I also looked into kdenlive but also was wanting just a little bit more.Lightworks has a pretty good collection of features and it works well on Linux. I can't really think of a feature it needs. I like your approach to what you do. You have a great setup. To the person who stated you still can't use Linux for everything because you camera remote must use Windows, I feel the shortcoming there is with the company that makes the camera. It doesn't seem you are really at a disadvantage not having a built in microphone on the camera and the way you have the setup can be an advantage if you want to use a second camera during the shoot because you can still keep the good audio while showing the image from the other camera.

I love me some Lindows. Oh wait, what happened to that? That's right Linspire and Freespire. At least I have Mandrake....errr....Mandriva? Well, there is still SUSE.... Now in open form. How about RedHat which was supposed to be a Windows replacement?
I like Linux because of its adaptability. Been using Linux for a long time, since 97. It just seems to be one step behind the game as far has hardware support. Linux as an OS is pretty malleable. It's used from everything from smart phones to cruise missiles. But one area it hasn't been able to dominate is hardware support on a PC. You outlined that in this video. Things have improved a lot. However, still one step behind for the most part.
Typing this out on a Linux build BTW. It's awesome in it's own right but still has some issues.

Chris, videos like this keep me watching. I am transitioning from the corporate world of news to the freelance side and have chosen Kdenlive as my tool of choice. You are doing it the right way. Throw everything you need on the timeline and throw out the stuff you don't need. In the 'business' we called it 'slam-editing'. As stated elsewhere, I can slam-edit a minute package for a newscast in 15 mins or less. Quick keys, short cuts, whatever you want to call them, are the key. When I edit on avid, 90% of my edits are made by the keyboard. I haven't gotten Kdenlive set up the way I want it just yet, but your videos are helping. Keep up the great work. Oh yeah, edit machine is running Mint 19.3 due to some of your videos-

I wanted to ask you something about Linux I have done a few times, but I have never seen anyone actually do a Video about it. I have taken a Linux Hard Drive, (a hard drive with Ubuntu installed on it) and pulled it out of one computer and stuck it into another computer, and it works fine. Some super techs have warned me not to do this, but they never explained why? Well now I'm thinking of Video Editing on Linux (specifically Zorin), and I'm thinking of swapping my Linux 1TB SSD, from my main System, to my laptop to go mobile, then when I get home just plug the Linux SSD into my main System again. What do you think about this idea? Good? bad? No No? What?

Hey Chris, I have a question for you, really love the videos, hope you can answer me. I know you use arch. What do you use to customize your DE (which one do you use?)? Do you have a video about it that I dont know about? Like what icons you use, theme, window manager, etc. If you dont have a video about your customizations on the system would be cool to make if you could. Huge fan, keep up the good work, hugs from Brazil!

Hey Chris, I was playing around with Kdenlive 15.12.3 last night and I couldn't seem to get the proxy function to work. Either it's not intuitive or I suck or both, but I couldn't see/hear it encoding them on file add and playing the 4k clips was still high-CPU even for 40/50mbps ones from my phone. Great to see that it has it, but can't figure out how it works - any tips/links welcome :-D

I love Kdenlive!
It's super simple and still powerful enough for my own needs if I decide to do one of my crappy videos for YouTube.
I just wonder, how stable is Kdenlive for you? It still uses to crash every once in a while for me, especially when adding video files or messing with effects on A/V streams in the timeline a lot.

reply

Your video's always look great, but I have yet to get Kden Live to be stable enough to be useful, even after watching all of your Kden Live video -how too's-. That said, I'm still doing everything on Windows with Camtasia and a high def Logitec camera. It works, is stable and the video's look fine. That's why I'm sticking with it.
reply

I'm happy to see Kdenlive works well for you. I gave it multiple tries and between stuttery timeline performance and crashes, I just couldn't stick with it.
Curious: Have you tried Lightworks? It's a completely different workflow but based on your editing process, I think it would be even faster once you got the hang of it.

wheres the guy wanting some cheap priced high quality editing done by you because it literally takes you less then a hour to do it! Faster you are the less you should make right? haha Ohh thats only at my job :(
