NVIDIA's so-called RTX 5050 increases the price floor beyond accounting for inflation and fails to add value while inheriting all of the problems of the RTX 50 series. In this video, we transition from talking about the specs and announcement marketing around the 5050 to general discussions and opinions of NVIDIA's media control tactics and the future. AMD managed to make entire generations of cards that are total wastes of sand, lol. Digital Foundry was correct to call DLSS the real fine wine...
Even with the RX 9000 series, I can see the writing on the wall. FSR4 objectively is inferior to DLSS4; by a lot. There are instances where even FSR4 Quality looks worse than DLSS4 performance & many more where DLSS4 Balanced looks better than FSR4 quality....
Then there's MFG. I wouldn't have marketed it the way Nvidia did, but that doesn't mean it's not a ground breaking technology. It replaces things like motion blur (which I hate, but am forced to use at times) and black frame insertion to smooth out the visuals and increase immersion. All while being mostly unnoticeable (with reasonable base frame rates (80 FPS)) outside of fringe examples. It doesn't negatively affect your HDR experience like BFI either.
With OLED, 800 Hz HDR monitors are possible. The prices are already falling because none of this requires expensive backlight hardware or manufacturing tuning to get outstanding results. So yes, MFG will one day be seen as integral to your gaming experience. It's just sad to me that reviewers allow their emotions towards a hardware company blind them to real value of these technologies. They waste time on talking about what MFG is not rather than focusing on what it is.

So, my best friends wants to build a new machine soon, trying to figure out what to do, the budget is not set in stone yet, probably 1K, in the Netherlands, where everything costs a bit more.
With all that said and it being a 1080p system still, i am thinking an RX 7600, 265 here, just 8Gb is i think still fine i think, but maybe this RTX 5050, which will i then hope will be around 275 here, but i wanna see some comparisons first, because as of yet i am not convinced yet, and then maybe the DLSS does actually bring extra value.
An RTX 5060 8Gb is 315-400 here, so if this 5050 is going to be too much and a 5060 for 315 is available, well, unless there is no more room in the budget at all, what to do.
But that this is the state of things just sucks ass.
To be clear, i don't wanna buy the 5050, or the 5060, i would most like to not give NVIDIA any money this time around, i would buy a complete AMD system, but for the price and performance, if the 5050/5060 would be better, i feel i still should,, unfortunately.
The minimum size for this years' Disappointment T-Shirt is going to have to be XXXL Extra Long, isn't it !

Nvidia's sleazy and I hate them but I think you're overcompensating when you draw this line in the sand and say you're going to ignore the existence of upscaling in your charts. >90% of gamers enable it when it's available and it's only going to continue getting better. I haven't bought a card in two generations, not because they're bad value, but because nothing exists that needs anything faster. IMO anyone upgrading from a 3080-class card is doing it for consumerist cattle mindset, not performance. I'm glad to see you're diversifying your coverage because frankly I play more on my Steam Deck than my PC anymore... once you get off the treadmill of gotta go faster and realize the games themselves are just as fun on a device that uses less power at full load than my PSU alone wastes as heat, it's pretty eye-opening. Deck 2 - assuming it's UDNA & Zen 6/7 - might be the last gaming hardware I buy for a good long time.

Yeah, I have seen more and more advocacy among certain knowledgeable streaming V-Tubers for getting secondary ARC cards just for Intel's surprisingly better performance for their specific Streaming and/or VTuber Model.
Except in this case it seems mostly because Nvidia doesn't allow that kind of product below $10,000 and Radeon is still struggling on niche uses, as they're only recently in the last two generations begun to find their footing for stability in just regular streaming and gaming. Really mostly because Nvidia very obviously does not give a rat's a s about anything that isn't minimum 6-figure B to B.

NVidia got away with their filthy business practices of misleadingly selling the same mediocre GPUs from the last 5 years and rebranding them as 'new series.' Also, it is a monopoly because there is no competition: AMD is too lazy and too greedy to compete; their GPUs are power hungry, mediocre performance, and bad value; they also do the same as NVidia: shameless money grab by setting unreasonable prices for recycled low tier GPUs. Intel's a baby in GPU research and development, so they are pretty much useless for the market and gamers, and it is going to be like that for decades.

Just got an open box 9070XT, literally no regrets, the games I couldn't play, guess what, I now can. Yes, it may be beaten in some on RT by the green team, but it's soo much better and in some cases I can play games with Rat tracing on full settings, or like Cyperpunk, you can play at 1440 and use FSR (which if you can find a game with FSR 4 is much improved). So, I am happy to say, YES to the AMD rx 9070XT great value for a fresh upgrade ( I upgraded from RX6750XT)
GREAT VID BTW, your to the point, honesty and experience is (Apologise for any splleing misatkes)

When the 30 series came out I warned people about the direction the 60 tier cards in particular were heading - much lower relative performance compared to higher tier cards and the increase in prices. I warned how budget tier gaming would soon be next to impossible and how high fidelity PC gaming would soon become a hobby only for the rich. I was simply told by the elitist 80/90 tier owners to stop being a poor, get a better job etc.
Now look where we are...

Understand that publicly traded companies are compelled by law to seek increased dividends for their shareholders by any legal means necessary. Even if nVidia suddenly decided to be ethical, they are legally bound to continue not being ethical or face lawsuits from their investors. AMD would do the same thing in the same situation. Intel did do the same thing. It's mandated.

On a plus side, there's never been a better time to go with an AMD setup. The 7000 and 9000 series cards are pretty much all great, and with AMD's excellent Open drivers, they're ideal for leaving Windows behind as well. I'm playing just-released games, at 4K60, in HDR with ray tracing, on Linux with my RX 9070. Nvidia aside, AMD and Valve are knocking it out of the park together.

Pretty much have no choice here when every AMD card is weaker or on par then a base 4060 for blender.
Though that AMD is at fault by focusing on AMD pro renderer, forcing us to convert every model we use to the limited AMD shaders manually, then roc-m support for cycles/redshift/autocad light house, etc and carved themselves a spot being way way behind nvidia.

At this point, it's been an easy choice for me: I stick with my FX-9590 and AMD GPU for decent 1080p performance. I've had more fun building around other components and retro systems than getting involved with an over-inflated market, manipulative price points, and dishonest messaging. Modding hardware and playing with old stuff has been my bastion.

I just bought a new pc with a 8gb 5060 in and the new game roadcraft throws a message if i try to put the video setting on High that the video card i'm using doesn't have enough v ram and that i might get bad results or something like that. If i ignore the message and do it anyways, I get bad noticeably bad performance.

Honestly This is why print media is dying. You can talk all you want about how it's the internet's fault, but people who might be interested in knowing these things simply don't trust the institutions to be honest. It's like the news in Pyongyang -- you can read it if you'd like, but there's nothing true in there.

If GPU companies don’t want to contribute to e-waste because some of their chips aren’t powerful enough to run games at a decent 1080p frame rate, then they should price them accordinglylow enough to sell, just enough to avoid waste. That way, they could prevent the problem in the first place.

Damn I don't even have a PC for a few years and use my phone for everything and am thinking is saving money for a PC for fun but should I just keep waiting lol. Or is the 50 series okay if you haven't used anything since like forever or should I not have sold my com with a 3080ti
reply

Three generations later I would've liked to see the RTX 5050 match or BEAT the RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 3070. But NO. Here we are 5/7 years later STILL USING THESE CARDS BECAUSE IF YOU BELIEVE YOU DESERVE TO HAVE A GOOD GPU FOR ONLY $300 NVIDIA THINKS YOU SHOULD JUST DIE!

I still don't understand how Frame Gen AI doesn't already tax the video card more and cause frame rate LOSS. Why can't the compute power of AI section of modern video cards be used to actually render a video game, rather than faking it between real frames
reply

they don't care about the longevity of the scene or the health of pc gaming, they want to bleed it dry for shareholder revenue and wealth for Jensen that he's working to make sure it never gets charged inheritance tax. it is and was always about money.

I keep hoping there is a reason to go back to PC gaming but every year it gets worse. There is no reason to PC game anymore with horrible ports, price gouging and diminishing returns on graphics and performance. PC gaming has lost its identity

Some websites have a disclaimer at the bottom a 2 paragraph section saying that even though AMD seems better AAAACTUALY they suck and only influencers say they like them and that nvidia is actually better. You can't make this crap up.
