I am so glad you guys made this video. It's nice seeing you using a 9 weight for smaller fish, too. Congrats on your first musky on the fly!
Braided line for a bite guard? Nope. Wire if you like it. Heavy flouro is best, in my opinion. Better movement and Seaugar IGFA saltwater rated 100# flouro will stop bite offs, if you are not a wire guy.
Do not use the rod tip to move your popper, ever. You need to be in contact with the fish, at all times. Stop worrying about color. Worry about profile, shape, size, realism, movement and color last. Musky don't care about color, people do.
NEVER worry about putting a musky on the reel. Never. Never raise your rod above your waist. Keep the line as tight as possible, every time, at all times. Do NOT trout set. Strip set, hard and at a low angle. Then, do it two more times. If the fish are under 40-, do not let them take line. Pin them and force them in. You never -tire them out. - That's how you kill them in August. That fight should have been 12-25 seconds, tops. Musky tire fast, unlike pike.
Those flies are much too small for a decent size musky. This is not a set in stone rule. But, overall. 9-10- flies will weed out the tiny ones, for the most part.
The reason you are losing them, as if they needed any help tossing that fly, you are letting them run around, with not enough pressure.

As with many casting instructors it-s do as I say not as I do. You say out to the right on the back cast and up over the top on the forward cast. I watched and after this instruction I didn-t see you do it once -

Over fighting muskies is a death wish to these fish. With flyrod it seems to take to long to get in and unhooked. Great catch though
