So sad to see you snap your rod, bugger. If your Ugly Stick seller / sponsor / etc won't replace the rod then if you want to repair that rod then all you do is grind the broken ends square off, using a long drill to drill a hole a little bigger than a 3/8 inch bit of bamboo dowel that's just over 10 inches long that fits into the hole loosely, drill about 5 inches deep into each broken end down the center & epoxy the bamboo dowel into each end leaving about 1/8 inch gap between each end so that you can fill with epoxy. This will strengthen that break stronger than before if you really love that rod. But if you can't be bothered just bin it & buy a better rod that cost more money.

I remember my boat setup, which was almost identical to this. The difference being my Ugly Stick was an
original 30/60 all roller, and i believe it was made in the USA. My TLD20 was also one of the original versions
and made in Japan. Don't know where they are now, but i'd bet they're still being used, as back in the day there
was a bit of pride put into manufacturing, and the brand meant something. Chinese rods snap, and Chinese
reels break.
If you really want to be able to rely on your gear coping with possibly the fish of a lifetime, you're going to have
to pay a premium.

I thought you guys use the metric/kg system. ooh and I habe a request if you would
1. I'd like to know how and WHAT of a razor clam you eat (are stomach, bowels etc. removed) and
2) If they present a threat to the marine life, fishing industry as I think I once read that certain countries regard razor clams as a -plague- and don't want them to settle in their waters
3) Do Oysters usually have pearls in them?
4) do you work in the fishing industry?

Good job I stuck it out to see the BBQ and the sausages, Awesome job in Scotland John, did you catch that little dig that you kept your hands clean as he was threading the bait on the hook, all in good fun no hard feelings.

and release ) only, Halibut all kinds of Salmon and bottom fish, oysters, shrimp, the list is endless.

I used to be super impressed with common skate, I have caught them from the shore up here(Loch Erribol, however they now seem small game after your amazing tuna video. Man that made me jealous.
Skate are more like landing a piano - it is a tug of war. I landed a 200lb skate on an old shimano uptider and abu 7000. Played from the bottom eye and wound up by the star drag - for 45mins - and a week after a cartilage operation. Not advisable. -

I'm a big fan of the ugly stick up to around the 15 kg rating, for the 15 to 24 kilo set up I can recommend the Shimano beast master stand up rod a little more pricey but a lovely long forgrip and it loads up with a lovely bend & balance with a tld25.
Well done on the skate we used to hook similar size rays in NZ on big baits intended for snapper we nick named them freight trains cause they take some stopping. ---

Having given it another watch. Gotta hand it to you. Great recovery despite the situation, Improvised Adapted and overcame to bring the catch to the surface.
I wonder if you gave the Rod a Burial at Sea. or will you be contacting the company by sending them pics of the Break so they learn from the breakage and whereby strenghen future builds. And maybe send you a replacement FOC [ Free Of Charge ].

Informative video as always. if its any consolation John, I've broken 2 Penn 50lb class rods on them in 2 years, this year I was using the GX2 and it was fine. Then again, I always give them some beef, rather than palying the waiting game. I figure if the rod is going to go, better it goes after 30 seconds rather than 30 mins!

I'm surprised the line doesn't cut the outer edge of the Skate as its being fought in. It must be like cheese wire after all with lots of tension. I suppose the fact its heavy gauge and wide line stops that happening? EDIT= I just heard the term -Rubbing leader- which sounds like it could be the answer to my question?

Brilliant video what an amazing looking fish skate are. Once went to an Aquarium on Anglsey where you could touch them and they seemed curious about us humans and would turn and come back for more stroking. (not monsters like you were catching. Nice to see you release them with as much care as possible.
