You'd have to be crazy to eat a fish caught anywhere in Florida. Maybe you found some clean water near the inlet where the tide brought it in but you have no idea where that fish has been in the days and weeks before it was caught. Nine people are known to have died last year and seven the year before from exposure to that water. All the toxic fertilizer runoff causing the algae blooms also feed huge blooms of vibrio, an antibiotic resistant, flesh eating bacteria. Vibrio kills your liver, so most cases go undiagnosed because everyone just figures the sclerosis was because the victim drank themselves to death with alcohol when vibrio may have been the true cause. One guy died because water from the indian river lagoon splashed his leg and he had an open cut. Another died after being stabbed by a fish fin and then he got vibrio. Its just crazy that they let tourists who don't know any better come down here and swim in the water. Even crazier that you go to a restaurant and they serve you a fish that came out of water that stinks and is killing the fish that swim in it. Don't worry about the tourism industry, they will play a bunch of TV ads saying everything is fine and idiots will come here and send their kids into the water to play. If you die of vibrio, they will probably say you caused your sclerosis by drinking yourself to death.

Hate to burst anyone's bubble but Red Tide is a colloquial term used to refer to one of a variety of natural phenomena known as harmful algal blooms or HABs. The term red tide specifically refers to blooms of a species of dinoflagellate. 'Red Tide' has been around a long time, it's just one of nature's murderous ways to self balance the environment, but hey let's blame humans as the cause, not nature. Red tides in the Gulf of Mexico have been occurring since the time of early explorers such as Cabeza de Vaca, it is unclear what initiates these blooms and how large a role anthropogenic and natural factors play in their development. It is suggested that Red Tides were around before the explores got here but of course, nobody was recording them. A natural part of our environment.

This is criminal to destroy our environment, destroy marine life, food, even our drinking water from lake Okeechobee. They call it algae to ease the impact. This is actually bacteria with deadly neuro-toxins. The direct responsible is the Same person that defrauded medicare for many millions and then got reelected as governor. This is all about making money they don't care for the people. They have to either collect the toxins and destroy them, or forbid the use of this chemicals in the sugar crops or forbid the planting of sugar.

The truth is that I year our side of Florida is alright but the last three years it was us. Let them pump out to us next and we will have a bloom again as well. Our lagoon may not be having a bloom but it's very sick none the less. And all the necessary components are in the much on the bottom after years of blooms and the algea dying and settling. Have a hurricane come thru and stir the bottom of the lagoon and we will have a bloom. This was decades in the making. It will take real, solid action to fix this.

For those of you who are not aware cyanobacteria(blue green algea)is a bit different then red tide! Yes they both are horrific for our fisheries. They need to set up a filtration system at both East & West sides of Lake O where the locks are. Small amounts of chlorine used in conjunction w/ultraviolet lighting can kill this stuff and make it non toxic! Chlorine bye itself will kill cyanobacteria, but it will remain toxic even dead! Educate yourself people.

Yeah all the animals went North to get out of poison that's why there's so many fish and you're able to catch them. but south of you all the fish are dead from the green algae toxin from Lake Okeechobee, it's not just the red tide the media keeps pushing that, it's green if they haven't noticed.
