The SECRET to Catching Big Fish: GIANT LURES

Love throwing giant lures inshore. The concept of catching fish on giant swimbaits and topwaters is a blast.
I've caught a 9 trout on a 13 muskie topwater inline prop-bait, and I got a tiny little snook just under 5 on a 14 hardbody swimbait.
BBig mouth fish will blast big baits. And if you want to take it to the next level you can rig your setup to where you have a smaller type of lure/fly in front of the bigger one. It causes several things to happen. It can make a fish looking at the bigger bait going after the smaller one and the competition instinct kicks in so they try to take the smaller bait from the bigger fish chasing it. The other instance is where a bigger fish will see the larger lure following the smaller teaser in front of it and strike the bigger lure assuming that it is distracted from other predators while focusing on getting the teaser itself.
Just make sure that if you buy the large freshwater type lures to change the hooks out for stronger ones. I often replace the treble's with a non-welded double hooks. If the lure was costly though (40+) I like to put a bit weaker hooks on it so I can straighten out the hook if it means saving my lure. Just make sure to use heavy. really heavy gear with these big baits or you could destroy your rod. and for big fish like snook n the passes or around heavy structure, .well. it speaks for itself.
Lastly. DO NOT target tarpon with these bigger lures if they are heavy or you will end up spitting out your teeth after it flies out of their mouth and back at you. But feel free to use say a giant style of weightless soft plastics that are big for them. I love throwing these giant softplastic tiki baits in the bridges shadow lines at night. They go crazy for giant baits and its fun watching them chase them in the shadows.
Remember. there's no such thing as too big of a lure for big mouthed fish. Ive seen 20 snook floating dead with a maybe 14 bass stuck in it's mouth before.
(If your looking for a good big lure, look at the Spro-BBZ-1. It is what turned me on to big lures years ago when they came out. And after getting a 27lb snook (On the west coast in Tampa, which is VERY rare I was addicted)

Excellent episode about the life and times of Darci, Brian, and Dad. I will continue praying for dear ol' dad. I can see how you two love each other. I am the father of 3 daughters and a granddaughter and I have fished with all of them. Keep doing what ya'll are doing and I hope to be able to fish with Brian and Darci one day!

Yes to more stories from Dad. Too bad you don't have any video to go with them. While I was in Florida I went fishing on the pier in St. Petersburg with shrimp and jigs and I kept on catching this fish about 14-16 inches long. It was a hard fish to eat, alot of bones in it. I'm not sure what it was called.

Just want to wish all of you a safe time down there. I've been watching the storm and it don't look too good. My son was living down in Hollywood last year when Mathew hit. Now he's back up here in Saratoga Springs, NY. Batton down the hatches and be safe!
