in malaysia/neighbouring singapore, its called cucur bawang.
instead of milk, use egg.
and you can add various mix ins like dried anchovies or dried silverfish. add your choice of chillis/peppers to give it a spicy bite.
dip in sweet and spicy sauce.
sweet fritters dont use eggs, uses water instead but some recipes uses coconut milk to make it more rich.
sweetcorn, durian or banana fritters. just puree the banana or durian before mixing with flour.
add sugar to flour when mixing for added sweetness and more darker color.
if you add grated coconut to the banana fritters, it adds a different texture/mouthfeel

I just made these and they are so yummy! New fav snack. The only changes I made were I added a little better than bouillon roasted garlic flavor along with the other spices to the onions and mixed before adding the flour. And I didnt have corn meal so I used some plain breadcrumbs. They are so delish. I only made a small batch to make sure they came out good since I didn't really measure anything. I just eyeballs everything. But they are perfect. Thank u for the recipe I love these so so much

Trader Joe's has something very similar in the freezer section called Bird's Nest's. They are onion with bits of Kale and Carrots and come with a delicious soy dipping sauce. I love to eat them with organic Hummus. I most definitely will be making a large batch of these and freeze them for future sides or snacks and save myself $3. 99 per box.

If you like these you'll like Pakora even more. No need to add any liquid, and the Besan (chickpea flour) makes for a crispy result. Find a recipe video that is presented by an Indian or Pakistani in their own native language, make sure they don't add any liquid in the recipe, and then use that one. A deep fryer is best for cooking them.

I made the Outback Steakhouse Bloomin' Onion a few years ago. The dipping sauce came out 100% PERFECT! The onion itself came out decent, but it _was_ messy and I didn't quite get the coverage of the batter that I wanted.
So, I think next time I have a taste for that I will try it this way instead. Thanks John!

EXCELLENT! I made it tonight! Just subbed out the regular flour with some Coconut flour since my wife has gluten issues. The sauce was AMAZING- I just added a couple splashes of Worcestershire sauce though. After All, I am the BOSS of how I make my SAUCE! A keeper recipe!

I made a copycat onion blossom recipe once many years ago which turned out amazing, and the only thing I remember about it was that it used Old Bay Seasoning in both the batter and the sauce. This looks great, but I'll probably put old bay instead of cayenne!

the first recipe i ever made of yours was like 12 years ago. it was the basque inspired braised lamb shoulder chops and after i ate that, i knew i'd be using many more of your recipes, which i have. this will be another one to add to the list for certain

These are fantastic! They're very cheap and easy to make, come together quickly, and taste just like potato latkes- especially when paired with the sauce. As someone who isn't bothered by onion eyes, I very much appreciate you making this video!

If people complain about turning the food in the oil more than twice, they can make a campfire and burn it instead. Sheesh, you don't want more oil, don't use oil guys. Great tip Chef, you can turn it as many times as you like.

You should visit an India/Asian Providern And Get A Fryer. The Kadai/Wok.
The Are Deep enough to Gibe Room For Full Frying On Bith Sides. And Use A Spider Strainer. It SHOULD Be Metal Due To HOT OIL! : ) Instead Off A Flipper.

There’s no sour cream in Bloomin onion sauce.
If that’s your version, that’s fine.
But if you want a closer sauce, no cayenne, no sour cream, add a decent amount of paprika, a little oregano and garlic powder.

I will make those for sure, but i would also be interested in those 12 sauces as well. Would you be able to make a video on sauces to go with pretty much any finger foods That video would also be great to see.

Your elementary school English teacher, failed you spectacularly. You have no clue when, and how, to put emphasis on words. It's like listening to someone rev a 2 cylinder engine, over and over and over again.

Never thought to add horseradish to a sauce like this. Makes me think itd really punch up a burger sauce! Or with just mayo to dress an all beef hotdog, with caramelized onions added - call it a steakhouse dog.

5: 59 this is where the ridiculously large kitchen tweezers truly shine.
Flipping delicate and delicious foods in delicate situations.
And no, i don't mean tongs. I mean ridiculously large tweezers.

I get why, but it will never not be funny to see the steps to add a bunch of salt to pull out moisture, then have to rinse it with water to get off the salt, then add the salt back to have flavor.

While I'm messing around with hot oil anyway, I could totally see having these with a roughly equal number of potato pancakes. I bet the dipping sauce would easily pull double duty with some tater fritters

Chef John, This looks delish. I have a question about the batter. awhile back I made your beer batter fish and really like the batter flavor. Thoughts about using that instead of the flour

This just made me want latkes. I'm going to see if you've done a latka episode - but either way, I'm not inspired to try awesome blossom sauce with my next batch of latkes! ;-)
