One of the strangest things I had to readjust to when he passed was going to any public function where there were crowds. Bc as you know, you can never walk further than three steps without someone exclaiming out about their size, cuteness, manners/training and gentle but arresting beauty. It was strange to walk through a crowd unnoticed again. Danes are such regal, loving couch potatoes that once you have one, if you love them as good as they give (love you, you will never want another breed of dog in the same way. They are magic.
How old is Kernel Elvis made it to 10 3/4 years old, though he had, had to have a full shoulder reconstruction by then, and dealt with arthritis and hip dysplasia, I was proud he stayed with me for so long. I was honored to have shared my life with him.
Though another dog will never replace him, I hope to one day be afforded the pleasure of sharing my life with another Dane. Any Danell do ya, every coloring is stunning but if I had to pick. I have to go Harlequin, Merlequin or Fawnequin. I just adore the spots and patchy noses.
Kernel is an angel on Earth, just like my Elvis Aaron. Thank you so much for sharing this, the fact you and Kernel are out there making people smile as we speak, makes the world a little more tolerable today. Hugs

Hi. Im 67 yrs old. The first great dane (Liade Poo) that gave me life, joined me when i was 17 yrs. I needed her. We enjoyed each other for 13 years. The second was Odette. She was going strong at 10 untill the first episode of deadly dog food went through the country in the early 1990's and caused kidney failure in so many dogs. The current boy i have enjoyed for only 5 years. I adopted him at 4 mos from a local shelter. Previous owners were heavy handed with him. He thought his name meant come here and get a beating.
We have dealt with anxiety starting with a name change but ot still lingers. At 1 1/2 yrs, Alfie started to decline. Finally Dr Burnham diagnosed adrinal failure. Since, Alfie has required a monthly hormone replacement (about $200. 00. He is as sweet and loving as all the other critters i have ever raised. However his poor genetics have caught up with us in another way now-Wobblers. It is nearing time for the rainbow bridge as his pain killers are not fully managing his discomfort. I am on fixed income and am still fairly strong enough to help him for a while.
One redeeming event occurred recently. The puppy mill that i suspect he came from was discovered and shut down. About 50 dogs were rescued in a town near Boisie idaho. Many had to be euthanized.
I may never be in a position to enjoy another dane.

I have a cat like this. My wife found him about 10 years ago as a stray kitten outside her workplace in the bushes, hungry. She called me to ask if it was OK to bring him (Oliver) home. I am not a cat person so, I said we'll give it a try but if it doesn't work, we can't keep him. That night he fell asleep in my arms upside down. Needless to say, we kept him. Ever since his first day, we have not gone a morning without him running up to me as soon as I a wake for a hug. He follows me around all day like a dog, and he's lying next to me as I type this. I couldn't imagine life without him.

KERNEL made me miss my Dane. I have had three and loved every one of them. He made me so happy I had tears of joy watching him. I have a Staffordshire cross who is very protective but not as demonstrative with the love that my Danes had. Don't get me wrong, she is my life but I miss George, Penelope, and Cosmo too and miss those hugs.

i worked in a horse stable, they had a big dane. he was friend with a tiny dog, Mardol. they was so fun walking together! when it was raining, Tom was the umbrella, Mardol was almost running with his short legs! and the two both helped me so much to catch the horses! my dream is having one, a day, i can t now, i m in an flat, i need a garden.

Beautiful Boy! I have had a Dane also but about 1\2 the size of your big boy. He was the runt and was also a lap dog. Never a sweeter pup and I’ve always wanted another. Great breed who is slow to learn but with a little patience there’s no problem.

I was inpatient at Children’s all the time as a kid and would’ve loved some animal interaction. As an adult, I’ve worked there and several other Boston hospitals and being able to do more animal therapy would be so fantastic and healing.

As a man, I have to say that God has given men two of the greatest gifts that He could possibly give, one, the love of a woman and number two, dogs, just dogs in general, any dog, all breeds, well except for chihuahuas.

Great danes leave a unfillable huge hole when they go. I would knw. He was my right hand, how i miss him each and every single day past 5 yrs. Not a day has passed where i hvnt dreamed of meeting him again. Miss u my baby boy

My very I'll partially deaf great dane puppy is now almost 2, and just passed her service test. She goes to her first nursing home visit in 2 weeks. We hope to go to children's hospitals soon too.

My Great Dane could read me as well. He was my service dog. He instinctively knew what I needed. He passed of cancer at age 5. That was 2 years ago. My heart still hurts.
