We Happy Few is packed with real world references. We counted 27 in the first 20 minutes of gameplay! And many point to an alternate timeline You completely misread the article about bolshevics and communists. They gala is not held by the bolshevics, its held by people who dislike them and communism but the topic is about just that. I dont get how you could get -the bolshevics are anti-communists- from that article.\r\n

That poem that was mentioned in the redactor is also sung as the song 'Jerusalem' - It's got all sorts of patriotic connotations over here in England!
This was SO interesting, Jenna! I'd never have noticed so many of the smaller details without them being pointed out

the make up? masks? that people wear remind me of the make up artistry done for the album cover of Pinups by david bowie a little bit.
too bad this game is apparently about the -evil- of taking antidepressants to make your brain baseline normal lol

This is a really great video. Also, Americans trying to pronounce British locations never fails to make me laugh. Cheshire is pronounced 'Che-Sher', rather than 'Che-shy-er'. Keep up the great content!
Edit: Apparently some also say 'Che-Sheer'

So based on the presence of elderly men in the home guard in the 1960s, I suspect the divergence happened during the Second World War. The use of the German Empire flag may mean that German has re-established it's empire as a result.

3: 55, Cheshire's curiosity pop might also be a reference to The Little Curiosity Shop by Dickens, other than that it rhymes and keeps up the English literature theme I'm unsure of the significance though

As someone who was born and raised in Jersey it was really cool seeing you guys mention the battle of flowers. Completely missed it when I played We Happy Few. Thanks for the awesome video.

at 5: 15 the article does not say the Bolsheviks were anti-communist, it says the Wellington-Wells Committee for Anti-Communist Action is reporting on the secret Bolshevik history

I know it-s a long shot, but I hope you do another video on We Happy Few references/Easter eggs! I-m way too dense to pick up on them myself lol but I love hearing about them

Oh man I tried Fentimans Dandelion and Burdock soda. It was interesting at first. but then it started to gross me out more and more with every drink. >.

I can't believe you mentioned how Arthur has a copy of Brave New World in his office but not that Joy is a clear and the most prominent reference to it.
reply

-Liddell's Dandelion & Burdock- is probably also a reference to Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass.

The town's name Wellington Wells is probably a reference to the titular character in Gilbert and Sullivan's The Sorcerer, John Wellington Wells.

It's a shame shouting -Hey, remember this dystopia story? - over and over doesn't make for a particularly clever or interesting setting.
reply

i feel so confused. i thought this game came out years ago? i remember watching playthroughs of it. am i going nuts or something?
reply

I haven't played this yet, but 'Wellington Wells' is the titular character in Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera The Sorcerer.
reply

This is cool but the whole -it might be a referring to an alternate timeline- is dumb cause it is an alternative timeline
reply

The masks are also likely a reference to the -underdwellers- of A Boy & his Dog, another future dystopian society.
reply

This was fun, though knowing more about the plot of the game some of these observations are quite funny!

I'm glad there's videos like this that help teach uneducated swine like myself.
