NINTENDO SWITCH Review! Polished Hardware, Unfinished Software, and Expensive Accessories

We've spent the last week getting to know the Nintendo Switch. It makes huge strides for Nintendo, who has finally gotten it right when it comes to making a home console that is also a mobile platform. But there are still so many questions

Great review. I just dont get why they'd release it now?
I can watch Netflix on my crappy 3DS screen (which id never actually do) but not the shiny new home console, that comes with a decent screen?
How do they fluff that up for launch?
I don't care. I can watch Netflix on far more screens than could warrant relying on the Switch. but when Iron Fist comes out in a couple weeks. watching it on the Switch, could feel great! New machine, new awesome content - it would damage control the lack of games, just by virtue of being entertainment which I COULD access on that machine.
Zelda does look fapworthy. I won't state that Zelda itself isn't enough reason to own the console. it does actually seem to be a valid 'system seller' - But I can wait. I will now stop trying to sell myself this console, lol. (I do fully intend to upgrade to a Pro soon though. and that is because I has huge screens, and at least 3x games for which I would consider it dishonorable to play them on standard PS, over the Pro. maybe I could get a Switch instead. but no way is 1 game worth it, even a beautiful open world Zelda - Yes! Even that. Not worth it. Nope.

I feel like this was an okay review, but to me it feels like the script was choppy and that there wasn't an overarching point. I think if you watch it back to back with the Verge review you really see the difference. For instance mentioning that it's weaker than the PS4 and Xbox One is fine but the Verge did a good job addressing that Nintendo isn't actually -trying- to compete toe to toe with those consoles. Disconnects like this are what make this feel like a script written by a committee as opposed to a fluid arc or thought.
I think the video direction was somewhat well thought out. The Switch is a fascinating a beautiful piece of hardware but when in the hands of a human its flaws become apparent. I think that's why this video had so many shots of people holding the console/controllers. I would say that using the same angle with a blank backdrop became stale, and I think in general the video relied too much on that one shot.
Shit, I just realized I'm reviewing a review. I'm out.

The soft launch is cool by me. The average gamer is likely only going to buy at most maybe one game a month (and that's a GENEROUS estimate, and they have at least one or 2 good games trickling in each month, not counting the dearth of indie gems its getting. I'd rather have that than all at once then nothing substantial for a year.
My biggest concern is down the line though. We haven't seen any long term reviews of the switch, and my fear is that the hardware will have similar issues as the Guitar Hero 3 guitar, with the snap on neck. Those things were PRONE to having issues with the electrical contacts, and most I played ended up having unresponsive buttons as a result. Then again, maybe the way you insert it with the switch will remedy that. We'll have to wait and see.

i mean i sold my soul 2 nintendo ages ago so im obviously going 2 get it regardless
but it seems like theres a lot of promise, like this was the console that the ds ( and all of its iterations ), the wii, and the wiiu were all building to, almost like the past consoles have been a series of protoypes. many of the games during those eras have felt similarly. there were very few which felt like fully realized, artful, meaningful gameplay experiences.
after the gamecube, nintendo entered a weird stretch of time where everything they did was experimental and not purposeful
but this effort seems puposeful again, with a realized vision for hardware that doesnt impede gameplay like the wii or have unrealizeable goals like the wiiu
i think theyve finally done it

I'm sure this was mentioned in the comments many of times but the odds of a 20hr of battery life in the joy cons going out is pretty slim unless you're playing that long without break or charging for some reason. I don't care if the game can be play for short bursts or long ones. 20hrs is pretty long. Another topic is why this honest review of Switch was so critical was it was comparing this console with others with features and such. I guess it's fair to mention it but for the last two gens not all consoles at launch had all or some of the features we take for granted now, that's no excuse for Nintendo but just because it's not there at launch doesn't mean it won't over time like consoles current now. Some food for thought there.

Nintendos strive for simplicity is a well meaning one, but as the 3DS goes, it was too simple for my tastes, the settings are laughable, can't been change themes without going through a long loading screen, E Shop takes too long to load or sometimes just won't, but these are just nit picks for an otherwise great console, but it's lack of 3rd party support and abundance of shovelware on the E Shop meant that it just came off as a phone that can play games at a bad resolution and with gimmicks slapped on to it, but I'm definitely looking forward to what the Switch does

I have issues with a lot of things said in this video. Particularly the statement about how it may take time getting used to the offset position of the analog sticks on the pro controller. I find it odd that there was never a mention about the offset analog sticks with the joy cons on the tablet or in the controller mode at any point prior to this in the video. Additionally, the Xbox controller was praised for its quality earlier in the video, yet when the Switch controller sticks are offset it suddenly becomes noticeable and difficult to become adjusted to.

I'm not gonna blame a reviewer for reviewing what the company specifically gave them. An incomplete OS does not receive benefit of the doubt. If Nintendo sends an unfinished OS, then the review should honestly reflect that instead of trying to assume what it will be like. It doesn't really feel like a structured, refined script or a well edited review but I have seen much worse coverage.

Well the 3DS was very awkward at launch, and look at the success it has now. I feel like it's going to be a similar thing to that. They'll do a soft launch and things will progress throughout the year. Especially during the holidays. Firmware will get better, and much more games will be available. It's all in the matter of time, and decisions.

this system thumbs its nose at potential customers due to severe hardware shortcomings. my friend brought one over and we couldnt play on a tv because we didnt have the in package mini usb ac adapter. although i have like five at my house. really wanted to get on board, but hassle like that in this day and age is mindboggling

In every review I've watched the reviewer is always so impressed by how fast it switches from portable to tv mode. I don't understand how you can be impressed by that, there's literraly nothing impressive about that. Are you blown away every time you connect your laptop to a display also? It's the exact same thing.

The only thing this seems to neglect is that you don't have to use the joycon grip for both controllers to function as one. Being able to independently position my arms while i control something as opposed to clutching one controller with both hands seems pretty ergonomic to me.
reply

i know its not perfect but for the first portable/home console its not going to be perfect. they had to make compromises for the system that obviously show but just think of how good the future consoles will be when developers and engineers have these mistakes to look back on!
reply

So no mention that the joycons have a 20 hour battery life so as long as you're responsible with placing you controllers back on the docked switch every other day or so there shouldn't be an issue, especially compared to the dualshock 4 battery life.
reply

I like the complaints that people have on the joycons. this is why they have a pro controller. Yes, it's very expensive, but there is more technology in that thing than most controllers of today. Don't worry the price will come down over time.
reply

Thank you for an honest review!
Now I can decide and I will buy the PS4 Pro, I already have an xbox one and the pro ps4 will be more used than this new Nintendo console, unfortunately this device is very minimalist at all

So your have ADULTS who seem like they aren't really that into gaming try it out in this review and not say people who play games on consoles for a living or teens/kids who would be using them 95% of the time, smart move.
reply

What do you mean the joy con grip feels like a compromise? It is a compromise. The entire console is a giant compromise between a portable console and a home gaming console. Anybody buying a switch will know that.
reply

I think people are disliking because it's women reviewing it and they didn't give it a glowing 5 star review. Honestly, idk if I'll agree with this review when I get my Switch, but it's a great review, keep it Polygon!
reply

something i noticed towards the end of the video was the amount of women in this video and lack of guys. i like how theyre just slightly showing that there are gaming girls who care about the industry.
reply

With Zelda coming out in the Wii U as well, it's hard for me to justify this purchase considering that litterally the only game worth mentioning out for it right now. Great review!
reply

Such an awesome concept but I'll wait and pick it up in a couple of years. hardware launches are always so messy, I'll wait for some good bundles and more games to release!
reply

what happens if i buy a game digitally and lose my switch? if i were to buy another switch can i just re-download my game for free? or do i have to pay for it again?
reply

I'd like to see some people try the switch who know crap about video games, not just overly harsh women who look like they've never touched a game controller.
reply

Any news if Nintendo is planning to use a form or trophy/achievement system? I haven't heard any info on the lack of it or if it has it from anyone so far
reply

A fair review, I hope you will do a separate update once the features from the March 3rd patch are available however as that's the version consumers will be getting.
reply

I'm waiting a bit to see the games and stuff, but as someone who plays pc only I'm really happy with the switch concept and probably will get one. nice review!
reply

Why do people complain about the pro controller price? It's only $10 more than an XB1 or PS4 controller, and that's because of HD rumble & motion control.
reply

I really like this review. It praises the good, criticizes the bad and leaves lots up to the viewer in the terms of -Will you get this? Do you like it? -
reply

The kickstand is suppose to be Like that So it doesnt break or fall off when you place the console in it's dockststion while the kickstand is still out.
