Hands-on with Alienware's Steam Machine

We've spent a week testing out Valve's first foray into hardware. Here are our first impressions. Read the full feature here I bought the alienware alpha to use as a normal PC and so i could play a lot of my older games. It runs pretty much every last gen game at 1080p and only games like Witcher or Crisis i needed to turn down the settings to get 60fps. I dont know if this one just comes with Steam OS only but mine also came with windows 8 and i havent had any problem doing normal PC stuff. For newer games they could probably all run at 60fps if you turn resolution and settings down but if you dont care about frame rate might be better to just get a PS4 or xbox one. Still dont understand the hate for these steam machines, they are just easy to use gaming PCs.\r\n

I was sooo exited for this, I saw it was 450$ and that's the same as a console. Then as it turns out its 450 American and I'm Canadian so it's 649. RIP my chances of getting it PS: it's 649 before tax and tax is 13% here so that's 733. 37.

Thank you for the video. This reiterates the pointlessness of spending so much money on a gimped PC. You can simply buy a small PC, mini-PC etc. and have more features with the faster OS of Windows.

Really curious about the Steam Controller, can't wait to try it. Not sure if I'd get the whole machines, but I'm honestly not a huge keyboard fan so I'm interested in the alternative.

-it's lacking in the way of looking for specific items- you know, as you said that there was a -press X to search- prompt at the lower half of the page. Did you not see that?
reply

actually in a way, its cheaper than the alpha, the controller costs 60 dollars while the xbox one is probably cheaper, so instead of 510 dollars, its 450 dollars

I can't believe Steam didn't put a D-pad on their controller.
I mean, yeah, the left pad is maybe a d-pad, but it doesn't input like one. That's what matters.

I've had one of these for about 4 months now. It rocks. Ive havent had one issue. Running GTA V at high settings 50-60 fps, like Boss.

I got one of these but I turned it on and nothing just the Alienware logo and background. No start up, nothing else.
Help please.

Ok, so is there a desktop? Can you run regular linux software like LibreOffice, Firefox, VLC or Gimp? Is wine/playonlinux working?
reply

But let's be real, building your own rig is still superior in both performance and price to getting a steam box right?
