we’ll be counting down our picks for classic Hollywood celebrities that are known for silver screen achievements of their youth. Our countdown includes Marilyn Monroe, Sharon Tate, Clara Bow, and more! Is there any actor YOU want to see do one more movie I first watched Rebel Without a Cause in a film studies class and thoroughly enjoyed it, to the point where I got a great mark on the assignment for it. I remember being captivated by James Dean's character, realising that a lot of the common characterisms that made me love the coming-of-age films that I grew up watching hark back to this random movie from 1955 (random in the sense that I likely would never have watched this movie if not for my studies, not as in being one of the most celebrated films of its day. Once I learned of the fate of its three primary cast members, how they all died so incredibly young, and how their characters battle despair and loneliness in the film, it made me treasure the film even more.

Garbo has supposed to have said (with her Norwegian accent) I want to be alone! The murder of Sharon Tate & others was the background of Tarentino's film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. James Dean's other films included Giant and East Of Eden. Someone you could have mentioned was John Cazale. He only did 5 films: Godfather & Godfather 2, The Deer Hunter, The Conversion and Dog Day Afternoon. They did use archive footage for Godfather 3, making him one of very few actors to have all his film nominated for best picture Oscars. He died aged 43 towards the end of filming The Deer Hunter.

Great list I love golden age Hollywood. I would have flipped ranking spots of Garbo and Tate. Garbo was a superstar for the whole XXth century and had film offers from the 20s to 90s despite retiring in the 40s. Sharon Tate was barely a star in her time, never had critical acclaim, her only big box office draw was Valley of the Dolls. Actually I would have replaced her spot with Carole Lombard, John Garfield or Valentino.

You should have included Montgomery Clift who was involved in a serious vehicular accident that nearly disfigured him. He spent the decade following this accident struggling with substance use disorder to which he succumbed at the age of only 45. Alongside Marlon Brando, Clift was one of the earliest proponents of Method acting. The fact that Ms Mojo forgot to include him on this list is an insult to his legacy.

In my country, Philippines, there was an old literary short story written by a female writer that included Greta Garbo's name on one paragraph (maybe as a way to describe what her main protagonist was seeing during their timeline.
The story was a literary fixture in high school and in college reading classes.
I never knew nor did some online research that Greta Garbo was indeed a real person.

I was hoping you would mention Jayne Mansfield as her daughter Mariska Hargitay has gone on to become an icon in her own right by portraying one of the best female characters in television history Olivia Benson on law&order special victims unit a role that her mother would have been proud of

Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Jean Harlow, James Dean, Sharon Tate, Lupe Velez, Carmen Miranda, Dorothy Dandridge, Estelita Rodriguez, Maria Montez, Judy Garland, Natalie Wood, and Hattie McDaniel.

I would have added Carole Lombard as well. She was an icon of the screwball comedy genre. She was only 33 when she tragically died in a plane crash in 1942 while returning from a war bond tour.

Rest in peace to all of these stars. It's heartbreaking that all three stars of Rebel without a Cause died very young. James Dean was 24, Natalie Wood was 43 and Sal Mineo 37 when they passed away.

Elizabeth Hartman would've been a nice fit on the list. You can't help but wonder what paths she would've forged if depression didn't place a curse on her till the end.

Of all the actors and actresses mentioned, Greta Garbo alone might willingly withdraw from Hollywood. She didn't struggle to survive, just gone to the east coast, New York City.
reply

Jayne Mansfield
Sharon Tate
Natalie Wood
Marilyn Monroe
Jean Harlow
Those actresses who tragically died too soon leaving their legacy behind

So nice to see Greta Garbo being appreciated. Imho she was the ultimate movie star. Good for her being able to hide in plain sight in Manhatten.

Great video.
Gerda garbo was a great actress but she always creeped me out for some reason

reply

I never really noticed how much Jane looks like Marishka until I looked at the thumbnail for this video. They look exactly alike

Shirley Temple stopped doing movies in her 20's. Tyrone Power died at 45. Deanna Durbin quit Hollywood in her 20's as well.
reply

I expected Marilyn Monroe and Sharon Tate to be on this list. By far the most tragic losses I've ever seen in Hollywood.
