The Untold Truth Of The Shawshank Redemption
video description
Important differences between the book and film:
In the book, Red tells us right out that Andy escapes. (Well technically he starts talking about jail breaks and you figure he means Andy)
In the movie, we're given the idea that Andy might hang himself with the rope he got from a friend, and we think he might be dead until we see that he's escaped.
Also the movie is much less shy about killing off sympathetic characters, (fatguy from the beginning, Brooks, and Tommy) so the idea that the movie might feature Andy's suicide isn't out of the question.
Also, the scene where Andy first talks with Hadley on the roof is considerably more tense in the movie. This is because in the book Red tells us that Hadley is cruel during that scene, but in the film we've already watched him kill a man.
Also the movie leaves you believing that Andy might be guilty until Tommy reveals that Blatch was the real killer. In the book, Red tells you right off that Andy is innocent.
Honestly, both the film and book are phenomenal. But the movie is better

A pretty good movie but not anywhere the first place of a Top Movies Of All Times List. For starters the script got holes the size of the USS Nimitz. How could a prison director with a brain inside his head could ever trust his own financial scam to a convict under his care, didnt he realize that would have put him in a very delicate, vulnerable position? How could that be that all what the escapee needed to get rid of all that shyt stink off his body was a single rain, not even soap? How could he come into a bank looking so sharp, clean and groomed after all he went through? How did he manage to cross the border into Mexico whn his picture should have already been plastered all over the border states, in every police computer screen? No, no way this is the best movie of all times.

As a plumber, I would like to point out one major flaw. When Andy knocks a hole in the sewer pipe with a rock, it spews out of the top like a fountain, which would only happen if it was completely plugged up. Then, as soon as it stops he sticks his head into the pipe and its empty. Then crawls 500 yards through a 24 sewer main that isn't connected to anything, but simply dumps into a pond or stream. Is that how waste water is disposed of in Maine? Was it ever the case for an institution like a state prison? If it had been a storm drain, it wouldn't have been so nasty, especially during a rain storm.

The reason I heard that the Rita Hayward was omitted from the original movie title was because of the estate of the late Rita Hayward objected to the usage of her name in the movie title. They threaten the production company with a lawsuit over it. There are film usages of the late Hayward, but a Hollywood studio owned those rights and leased them to the production of the Shawshank film. The scene where Andy Dufresne plays classical music over the prison yard wasn't in the King short story. It was written into the script by Durabont

It was Shawshank's casting director, Deborah Aquilla who suggested Morgan Freeman to director, Frank Darabont, not Liz Glotzer.
Darabont was linked to Collateral when it was to be a small budgeted HBO film but left the project way before Cruise was on board. The script was firmly in the hands of Director, Michael Mann when Cruise signed on.
Cruise and Darabont never worked together in Collateral.

Shawshank is a true masterpiece. It couldn't have been more perfect. I remember watching it and then watching it again that night. I have a very strong feeling about this, too string to even find a word to describe it. The novella was brilliant and the film had me in tears. I actually cried because I didn't believe a move could be so good. I love Forrest Gump and all but this deserved the best picture Oscar more.

I was in the prison this was filmed the last four months it was open and was transferred to the new prison built next door for my last 9 months. It was no joke. It was a rough camp and thats putting it mildly. Since my release I never have got in trouble. In fact I left ohio and never been back. I went in at 19 and grew up fast. Only people who ever did time there know how bad it was.

If Tom Hanks were Andy Dufresne, it would be good, but he wouldnt be able to bring out the raw emotion Tim Robbins belted out, as he was a bit more experienced. Worse yet, you may already have seen him in a few comedy movies before this movie, so under circumstances he wouldnt have worked with knowing humor or intelligence wouldnt be in his alley, but for Tim Robbins this movie was IT.

I love the book, read it as soon as it was published. When I heard they were making a film of it I was dubious, could they make a good job of it? I love every second of the film, love the actors and how they fit the characters. I didn't complain about the few things left out and I absolutely love the ending, it completes the film beautifully.

We thank you very much for doing this film. Is fascinating to see the same places as the movie. We thought a large factor to making the movie so emotional, also, was the music.
Suspect it is impossible to imagine what it would actually be like to be incarcerated for something one is innocent of. Thanks again, Angela and Dave
