Arcade ports in the 80's were very much hit and miss, often sacrificing extra graphics, sound, and controls. But rotary joysticks or not, Ikari Warriors for the PC is one manly good time. Oh and yes, I am now a part of Retroware TV! Thanks to Pat, John, and the others there who have been in touch with me to make this happen. Check out their site for my retro-focused reviews in the future, as well as plenty of other fantastic retro gaming content! Just to make one thing clear: videos are still going to be in the same places, just more places. Basically, it's like how things are now, except with RWTV involved. Videos still go to Blip (and now RWTV) first, and then YouTube and everything soon after. Hooray for more exposure and such!

That's because these other systems were specifically designed to play games and manipulate graphics and sound with hardware based sound and graphics, albeit at a much lower resolution. Where these other systems failed were their being labeled and marketed as home computers, having little expansion capability, couldn't support novel, lantastic, and other popular networks at the time and didn't support token-ring at all, which nearly every large corporation was locked into through mainframe.

: D - great review, interesting that there are player a & player b and the one player is player b. think 2 player would be difficult if together - so would be turn based I guess - else the keyboard would be difficult to use. So hated it when other formats were used for screenshot artwork, as it meant you didn't get what you thought you were. ZX Spectrum games often did this too. A bit like some cheap DVDs & VHS Videos do, often indicated a deleted scene or a different film altogether.

When I was a kid this was my favorite game. I don't remember if we had it on our Commodore 64, Nintendo or Super Nintendo it's been way to long but I'm thinking it was on SNES because I think I have all the boxes from all the games I had when I was a kid and I think Ikari Warriors is one of them but I could be mistaken. I first played this at the arcade and when I was able to play it at home, this and RBI, those are the 2 games I remember playing a lot.

The Commodore 64 port was very good considering the hardware limitations and the SID chip tunes rock (although the UK C64 port was better than the American release, the American release is good. The Amiga port was visually very well done having decent arcade quality graphics.
Even the ATARI 2600 got a port of this game. and yeah. that port is -horrible-, but still it's okay I guess, considering how very limited the hardware is on the Atari 2600.

Oh no! You've been reviewing so long you've developed Alzheimer's! :P
Some serious Deja-Vu there. But it's a nice update. : ) The EGA mode looks pretty good, compared to the Dippin'Dots mode.
And in case no one else mentioned this, when it comes to games made by Japanese companies, or words that are meant to be 'Japanesey' (GINSU KNIVES, the vowels are the same as those in Spanish, so i is always -ee-, like in bee. or glee. or pee.

I'm gonna start putting together articles for new LGR episodes on the wiki, starting with this one. If you want to help out, feel free to. Once I get up to 6 or so articles, I'll PM you here and you can come over and start gathering material for your -big reveal- of it.

The half of a zelda map is the best thing in that box. My friends and I used -Ikari- as a synonym for -retarded- because of all the bugs in the game (NES version, which was a rip off $48 bucks, or about $120 in 2012 adjusted dollars, or 1/2 month of newspaper delivery profits. Any game as bad or worse than Ikari warriors was considered too Ikari to bother playing.

I played this with my father when I was a kid. Loved this so much. I knew it was called Ikari something and many videos had footage of the arcade which looked familiar- I remember it looked more -old- and barely any colors. Then you started it up and there it was: nostalgia! No idea it had a better color version. Thanks LGR

PC Booter games were really early ways of loading some of these games. From what I know, it was harder to code and work with, but you were able to get more or less done? I don't remember quite. Maybe Clint could clarify if he's got a sec. PC Booters were quickly done away with once other efficient ways were procured.
