Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
In this episode of Game Over(analyzed, Associated Researcher of Media Culture Lars Schmeink breaks down how cyberpunk is portrayed in modern video games. Most people recognize the cyberpunk aesthetic from movies like Blade Runner and The Matrix, but there are plenty of video games that fit into this subgenre as well. Lars talks about how the cybernetic enhancements from games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution relate to both real-life and cyberpunk fiction. Lars Schmeink is an Associated Researcher of Media Culture with Hans-Bredow-Institut. Lars is co-editor of The Routledge Companion to Cyberpunk Culture- 0: 00 - Intro 0: 46 - Cyberpunk 2077 - Deepnet 3: 01 - Cyberpunk 2077 - Upgrading 6: 04 - Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Forced Augmentation 7: 34 - Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - Biohacking 9: 00 - Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - Consciousness 10: 38 - Ghostrunner - Megacity 11: 43 - Cyberpunk 2077 - Cityscape 13: 15 - Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - Police State 15: 09 - Watch Dogs: Legion - Privatization 16: 52 - Cyberpunk 2077 - Cyberware 18: 17 - Syndicate - Repossessing Cyberware 20: 19 - Detroit: Become Human - Android vs. Human

15: 10 For a historical perspective one what can happen when private corporations (i. e. mercenaries) are used for large scale -security- operations, look to years 1350 - 1650 Italy.
The -Condottiero- were prevalent throughout much of Europe, but the city states of Italy (Milan, Florence, Genoa, etc) offer great examples of what can go wrong. Entire regions were basically held hostage and extorted for -protection money-.
Edit: Also, thanks so much for mentioning -Metropolis-. Perhaps the single most important movie of science fiction.

The whole idea of -uploading- your consciousness is completely impossible. You have to ask yourself, what is it they're uploading? It's not like you'll close your eyes as a human and open them again as pure data, it will be a digital copy of your mind, but is it actually you? What happens to the original? Is it destroyed? I don't think I'd be comfortable with having my mind destroyed to provide a template for a copy that isn't actually me.

Too much confusion in this video about what -Cuberpunk- is vs -The Future-. Cyberpunk isn't just defined by technology or the net. Bladerunner doesn't have an extended focus on all things being connected. Neither does Akira and there are numerous other examples. Just being futuristic isn't cyberpunk. There is an aesthetic that goes along with it and this video completely overlooks that. Deus Ex is NOT Cyberpunk

My only thought is the idea of militarization in these worlds like. how does one govern a society based around various levels of enhancements? If I was a police officer (even with possible implants of my own) I would like the best protection I could get considering weapons are concealable within prosthetics which negates most of the early warnings of an actual engagement like someone drawing a gun for example

There's a conversation in Cyberpunk 2077 with the Bhikku brothers after -losing my religion- quest and can be met near Megatower H8. Basically they thank V and he asks them about his situation and the philosophy behind and engram being a copy of a person or the person's soul and the Buddhist outlook on the difference and it's SUPER interesting

I think the story of Pinocchio might be one of the older stories to influence robot oriented science fiction. The relationship between creator and a creation made in the image of the creator, the creation's quest for meaning and morality, a soul if you will. You can see the influence in Bladerunner, the works of Asimov, A. I, etc.

Fascinating stuff! The game -Remember Me- would've been perfect for this analysis too. Lots of unique storytelling and novel as well as intertextual cyberpunk elements. Pressen, Sensen, Memorize, H30, Neo-Paris, Leapers, robotics, etc. And the game's take on the climate crisis is also interesting.

I would like to add there are definite differences between -western- style Cyberpunk compare to Eastern (mostly Japanese) style Cyberpunk. Cyberpunk 2077 kinda somewhat in-between, while games like Deus Ex is definitely a brutalist Western Cyberpunk.

If you want to play an indie, side-scrolling cyberpunk game, Dex is solid. It doesn't look nearly as good as these AAA games but as my first cyberpunk game, boy was it fun. Finished it in 2 days. Wish it was an open world game.

The example of biohacking that your man used in Mankind Divided is really bad, because Rucker wasn't attacked, he was poisoned with a toxin that targets the gene that rejects augmentations, this also affects non augmented people
