The Hawaiian Kingdom (Hawai'i) is not now, nor has it EVER been, part of the United States.

Congress rightly identified The Ku'e Petitions as as strong and undeniable assertion of Hawai'i's sovereignty by the people of Hawai'i to whom it's sovereignty belonged.
As the result of this clear and unequivocal assertion of Hawai'i's sovereignty by it's people Congress rejected the ratification of the Treaty of Annexation of Hawai'i.
However imperialist annexationist elements within the US Congress conspired to pass the Newlands Resolution in an attempt to effect an acceptable substitute for a mutual, bilateral international treaty which was the only legal means of legal annexation available.
Since the Newlands Resolution was a unilateral, domestic proclamation of annexation of foreign territory and it lacked the critical cession of sovereignty required to make annexation legal, the Newlands Resolution was not a viable and legitimate alternative to annexation by mutual, bi-lateral international treaty.
In spite of its failure to legally annex The Hawaiian Kingdom the US government decided to create a false narrative in order to falsely claim that it had legally annexed The Hawaiian Kingdom.
For the past 130 years the US government has managed to maintain the false narrative lie that it had legally annexed The Hawaiian Kingdom. However in 1988 the US State Department asked the US Department of State, in a confidential inter-agency memo, to investigate the US government's claim that it had legally annexed The Hawaiian Kingdom.
The DOJ conducted an extensive investigation of the US government's claim that it had legally annexed The Hawaiian Kingdom and concluded, in a legal advisory opinion, that the US government had, in fact, failed to legally annex The Hawaiian Kingdom.
The US State Department, DOJ, the White House, Congress and the Pentagon decuded collectively to keep the revelation that the US and had failed to legally annex The Hawaiian Kingdom and instead they have maintained the false narrative that The Hawaiian Kingdom is a part of the US.

But Polynesians/Hawaiians should have had this thinking from the second Europeans entered their land and started talking about treaties. As soon as you let them in and tell you whether or not your land is a country, you have already ceded power to them. They are like vampires -- once you let the vampire in, it is impossible to get the vampire out of your home.

I remember a show about stolen treasures and them being returned that my mother watched. One episode was about Hawaii. The weird part? I later met and married my husband who was born on Oahu and his mom s side was native Hawaiian. He and I had many conversations about the abuses of the Kingdom of Hawaii. I explain to our daughter about her heritage on his side at age appropriate levels too.

The Kingdom of Hawai'i was overthrown by groups opposed to the unilateral rewriting of the Kingdom's Constitution, including members of the Queen's court, native Islanders. The new document would have invested more land and power in the Royal Family at the expense of all Hawaiians. History is never as black and white as your silly program and headline imply.

Hawaii has a great culture and history. But the U. S. isn't going to give it back. And you're choice is U. S. or CHINA. And you may not have all the same rights as you do under the U. S. and the grass isn't always greener. Just look at what happened to the PHILIPPINES when the U. S. gave them Independence.
