The lack of historical authenticity in these recreations is annoying, especially when it panders to modern sensibilities. No, men didn't bring their own food in from the kitchen when there were women around. No, noblemen didn't wander the markets grinning like idiots -- treatises on gentlemanly behavior warned severely against fraternizing with the lower orders, especially slaves. No, men didn't chat with women as equals. No, words were not separated with spaces in Latin texts, as texts are today. No, clothing was a uniform undyed white, unless you were noble -- and they probably didn't have much polyester!

Early in I feel like describing Roman behavior is like describing American behavior. Broad stokes may be broadly right, but when you dial down they simply dont hold up and you find a squirming and ever changing microcosm of behaviors and and social morays, many in stark contrast to the others. Maybe in these vids Romans equals the absolute top tiers as they were the ones that people most wanted to be and they themselves were most able to pass their experiences down through the ages. So in 1000 years American behavior will equal the Kardashians. Guh

This film did not live up to its title How to recreate a Roman banquet. It does contain a great deal of information about the general eating habits of all Roman citizens at the time, e. g the rich, the poor, the travelers, the gladiators and the gourmets. One statement towards the end alienated me: the 5th century AD was not the end of gourmet cooking. This statements leaves out the rest of the world outside of Europe. The Arabic civilization, the Chinese, Japanese and Korean civilizations, the people along the Nile.

this is really bad. The documentary is just filled with conjecture, errors and flat out contradictions. Aesthetically it's quite poor as well. Hair-styles were wrong, costumes from the late-empirical period when they were claiming to be in the early. People doing things contradictory to narration, Post-American foods, modern construction techniques/materials (some of the merchant's kiosks in the market scenes were nailed, while others were, more accurately, joined. This is just very amateurish.

I always buy italian food despite only having one great grandfather who was Italian I lean a lot on my left elbow and eat with my right hand and I love wine and I am dissapointed by my lack of ease of having orgies despite being pretty well off financially I am like 99% sure that great grandpa descended from some super rich Roman family lol

Whenever I dream about traveling time back to antiquity (it's my dream) I always remember this is a world without tomatoes, pepper, chili, coffee, and tobacco, and as a Tunisian and a Modern day mediterranean it is unconceivable. So I feel suddenly that sadness and bitterness, I would've loved the times but hate the food!

There will never be a power like Rome again. I am not speaking of our modern weaponry verses theirs; I am talking about a power so persuasive, so above everyone else, and a power which was status symbol for all to aspire to. Makes me proud that I have Italian blood in me.

These Let's Eat History videos are amusing. as many in the comments point out these are riddled with inaccuracies. So I wonder if they were poorly researched or being that it looks like they were originally made in France if they were just poorly translated.
