Recognising a perfect or imperfect cadence at the end of a piece of music. Suitable for candidates preparing for ABRSM Grade 6 practical exams. In this aural test, candidates are asked to identify the cadence at the end of a phrase as Perfect or Imperfect. Identifying a cadence as perfect or imperfect is not as hard as you might think. As this video illustrates, a phrase that ends with the tonic or key note in the chord must be perfect. If the tonic is not present in the final chord the cadence must be imperfect. You will learn how to hear this clearly as the video unfolds. The video explores all the options ie V-l for a perfect cadence, l-V, lV-V, or ll-V for an imperfect cadence. Apart from equipping grade 6 students to tackle this aural test, beyond the exam it is most helpful for musicians to become more aware of cadences as punctuation points in the music, helping us to understand the structure of the music we perform and listen to, and assisting us to express more effectively what we perform. to grade 6 aural tests 0:23 - Understanding cadences 1:39 - Advice on recognising cadences 6:29 - An example of how to approach this test 9:46 - Practice tests - Grade 6 Aural Tests Course When it comes to music exams, candidates often prepare themselves well for the playing but are less sure when it comes to the Aural Tests. Interesting... in the United States we call your -perfect- cadence an -authentic- cadence, and your -imperfect- cadence a -half- cadence. The words -perfect- and -imperfect- in the United States have to do with melody within an authentic cadence (V to I in root position): going V to I and ending the melody on scale degree 1 (in root position) is our US -perfect authentic cadence-. Going V to I and ending the melody on scale degree 3 or 5 (in root position) is our US -imperfect authentic cadence-. Fascinating difference in terminology!

The way I was taught, V-I chords are called -authentic- and can either be perfect authentic, in which soprano resolves to tonic, or imperfect authentic, in which soprano lands on a note other than tonic, and cadences that end in the V are called half cadences... Is this just an American thing, or-?

Watching this video, a thought occurred to me: if the tonic is in a MINOR key then the dominant will be a MAJOR chord. So listen to the tonality of the final chord - if it's minor it must be perfect, if major it must be imperfect (of the two choices we're given). An extra clue for nothing :)

I learn a lot from your lessons, Sir and thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Could you please direct me to the link where you have taught how to identify Plagal and Interrupted cadences as well. Thank you once again.

thank you for for doing these - gone back to lessons as an adult and my music theory is decidedly shaky - grade 6 singing this term and grade 7 piano next so having serious practice sessions on aurals.

Thank you. You are obviously a very good and fine teacher, and a comfort. So many videos about cadences just make them more confusing, and somewhat amateurish, though they are trying to help.
