The picture sets up the riddle, but if the book order is reversed, 20- would be correct. (State that the book order is as pictured or numbered sequentially left to right) Also, because you asked us to think logically, how does a bookworm actually -START- in between two books? 18- would therefore be the logical answer because a bookworm would have to go thru Vol #1 to get to the starting point. -

There is ambiguity in question.
both 20 and 16 answers are correct.
because if books are arranged from right to left (10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1) then answer will be 20.
you have nowhere mentioned in question that books are arranged from left to right yes it is in image but you have not spoken that.

One more reason this puzzle is tricky, because in reality its tricky for the worm to start at front cover by squeezing itself between 2 heavy books, so in our insect loving mind we start at the beginning thinking that someone placed the book the other way, which is more plausible compared to worm squeezing itself.

This question has many answers. What of the books are arabic right to left readable books? Practicaly it's not possible for the worm to goto book 1 cover without eating the first part.
Also if the worm eats off the book the worm becomes fat and can't travel too.

The question is ill-posed. A chinese bookworm in a chinese encyclopedia would drill 20 inches and you answer isn't any more valid than that one.

actually it travels 16-+ its own length. if 16- then we just consider the worm's mouth travel distance. or how much book length it has eaten through.

I think worm's length should be added to 16 inches bcoz when its tail cross the back cover of 10th volume it would be considered as distance covered
