Not enough information available to solve using the cutting method. It is not known if the merchant can swap links with the landlord. SImply telling us the landlord will not spend any links the entire 149 weeks is not enough info. What if he locked them in a safety deposit box for example and the merchant had no access to them and the landlord refused to do the swap? This puzzle is not logical. It makes assumptions that are not stated as allowable. Downvoted.
Another valid answer is 0. He can just melt the links to separate them. Who said he has to cut them?

Interesting puzzle, but I'd suggest remaking the first part where the problem is given!
I do not agree that your solution is valid for the problem given! The problem clearly states -pay one link per week-, there is nothing about you being able to have access to the landlords safe to take and give gold links as you feel like, which also does sound unrealistic.

Wait. A cut link is not a link anymore it-s a bent wire. Your logic and process holds but the question is wrong as once you cut any link the total number of links left is only 148. A better way to have asked the question is with a chain of 149 links where you had to give one -link- per wk to the Landloard how many weeks can you plan to stay.

This is similar to another problem where you have seven bags and 100 coins of denomination 1. Arrange coins in bag such that any number I ask all I have to do is give set of bags without withdrawing coin from bag. Answer is 1St bag: 1 coin, 2and bag: 2 coin then 4, 8, 16, 32, 36

In my opinion the mathematical optimization in dividing the chain is very cool but honestly the solution is far away to be logic because it assumes that every week the landlord still has the gold links from the week before. What if he used them or just changed to cash?

Ok just pointing out a flaw in this. From what i heard its never specified what he is cutting the chain with, so if he had the right tools he could just cut the chain horizontaly ( cut each link in half) which means only one cut no matter how big the chain is

If i would consider ROD instead of chain then i would have cut the rod into 8 times, !st i solved as a rod. Its a really good Question for those who think chain as a rod but the difference is we can cut once for chain and same 2 times for rod

I think most landlords would rather agree to an advance or deferred payment of the whole sum at once, than agree not to spend any received payment for nearly 3 years. So maybe this rule should be mentioned at the start? :)

Hypothetically, as a chain ( depending on the size of the chain and what you have to cut it with, couldn't you just stack up up the links and cut them together with one cut (at the top of the links?

The merchant is literally fooling the landlord by giving a link to pay rent for a week and taking back the previous link which means he's taking previous rents and only paying for a week. -

Big fan, thanks for all the great content. If it hasn't been requested yet, can you please create videos with dark backgrounds. The white background is harsh in the evening.

Most of computer programmers with recursion or dynamic programming experience can solve such kind of problems as they are habitual to such reductionist technique

Why not just make it 159 then? It makes the problem and solution quite a lot less -beautiful- and elegant when you can make 70 as both 70 and 40 + 20 + 10.

It would have helped if the question stated the old guy kept the gold links. Also, the old man will sooner or later be blackjacked for the gold links for sure.

The question is not complete. As stated, once you give a link to the land lord, there is no guarantee that you can forcibly take one of the old links back.

When did the landlord say he would give back any of the links he was paid?
The exchange mechanism is a fail condition if I was asking the question.

The solution is going with an assumption that landlord is not using the golden links. What if the landlord uses, the solution will not be continued

For 9 links we need two cuts. 1, 3, 1, 4. The mathematical representation doesn't fit with 9 links having 2 cuts. Could you elaborate this please?

On a practical ground. what if the owner would have sold the gold links? Would you tell him please bring the previous links I have given to you?

The question itself is flawed. If the landlord is taking the rent he should be using it! Why should he be dealing with the person every week.

Well a logical person wouldn-t waste 30 minutes trying to calculate this, it takes one second to make a cut, do it every week, simple.

what about giving the whole chain then marking one chain (like highlight or sign) every week since the landlord doesn't spend any chain.

If the land lord is not going to spend any of them, why not consider giving him the whole gold chain for 149 weeks without cutting?

So he basically committed a crime of misdirecting the landlord and cheated him and broke his word this is not a logical solution

trying to talk my landlord into agreeing to this seems like way more of a hassle than cutting a chain every two weeks

Apply cut according to 2-0. 2-1. 2-2. 2-3. 2-4. I. e 1. 2. 4. 8. 16. 32. 64. So on until sum of all reach to 149.
