This is going to be so insightful for me! I have a pet jumping spider (she's called Ripley & she's adorable) I feed her bluebottle & greenbottle flies, but i buy them in as casters which then emerge as flies. 1st time i seen 1 emerge i was fascinated, i thought it was going to give itself brain damage with the whole bulging head thing lol i keep the casters in the fridge which kinda pauses their development & i only take a couple out a few days before i need them & then feed her when they emerge into flies.
Im going to need a separate fridge freezer soon, between all my animals i have the fly casters, salad & brambles in the fridge, then in the freezer i have oak leaves, pinky mice & weaner rat pups. Plus in my bedroom ive got 2 separate cricket colonies & some dubia roaches

The ptilinum is an ingenious temporary organ as it not only helps the fly to break open its pupae, but also gives it a place to move hemolymph from the rest of its body allowing it to slim down a bit to better squeeze its way out of its tight pupae. Other insects and arthropods have a myriad of different ways to escape their pupae and molted skin that vary from being able to wriggle tiny hairs covering their bodies to having enough segments that they can just ungulate to escape. Boy I'm glad we don't have exoskeletons to worry about.

The scene capturing an ongoing process of metamorphosis inside pupa is fascinating.
The final stage, getting out of a capsule, is an awkward moment. It's easily imaginable dragonflies or butterflies do it more effortlessly, making much of gravity.

Well filmed. I observed several cicadas this year going through eclosion. The most fascinating part was the inflating of the wings. These creatures are magnificent, and one can imagine Mother Nature using her flair when designing wings.

I've spent hours on microscope trying (and often failing) to see that ptilinal suture while identifying bugs. You'd think it'd leave more of a mark considering they literally inflate their heads like a balloon!

Flies are such underrated animals! They can look really funny or cute too! Big-headed flies (Pipunculidae) have heads that are basically just eyes and bee flies (Bombyliidae) are all fuzzy and adorable!

Huh, I never knew insects would have something like an egg tooth. I just assume they broke out like any other insect.

From my observations raising flies, it seems the flies consciously choose when to inflate their wings and also choose the speed of this, which can take several minutes or a few seconds.
