Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
In which John Green teaches about filthy, filthy lucre. Money. And Debt. So, what is money? And what is it for? And why do we use money? And why does it all disappear so quickly after payday? John will look into 75% of these questions, and if he doesn't come up with answers, we'll get into some interesting ideas along the way, at least. This week we'll investigate whether money displaces barter, then leads to war, slavery, and what we think of as civilized social orders. We'll also see what old Adam Smith thinks of big money, no whammies, this week on Crash Course. We'll also talk quite a bit about Debt: The First 5000 Years by David Graeber. -Geez. Graber- sounds like he complicates money unnecessarily. Adam Smith on the other hand makes money sound simple.
-Modern history proves Adam Smith right- as the whole world uses a type of currency. And all the currencies have a common history: all were at one point and time backed by silver and gold: therefore money naturally improved trading between people. after all how did Alexander the Great and Darius the Persian fund their wars? Punic War between Hannibal of Carthage and Rome? Money, that is to say silver and gold.

And eventually, they went from calculating debt in silver, to with human lives in the chattel market. Money is the root of all evil everyone. Anyone who tells you different just doesn't know it or want to accept it yet. It's why the mountain clans want no part of the supposed -civilized- world. That civilized world profited from war and continues to do so. Theres nothing civilized about any of this.

I get how based on most of written societies history, people might want to not believe honor based warfare is or was a thing. But I will counter that argument for anyone who's willing to read. Look up the endemic warfare of various ancient warrior cultures and the endemic warfare of modern endemic warrior societies the motivations are all tied up in the rituals of the raid, duel and battle.

States that barter economies never existed or led to the emergence of money, proceeds to explain how the fertile crescent had a barter system that led to the creation of money. Also, what's cringe-y about calling primitive cultures, primitive cultures? Also also, slavery existed in primitive cultures, it didn't start with the invention of money.
reply

Even in the Illiad, the -honor-based war- is a hoax for Agamemnon's ambitions to create an empire in Asia Minor. Helen's abduction (or departure, depending on the point of view) just provides him with a reason.
reply

And yet the word salary comes from salt which was how Roman soldiers were paid because salt had value and could be used to buy things. Also slavery seems to predate money.

I-m glad you say you don-t agree with grabber. Wish you-d go a little further and point out a few more of the logical fallacies of his reasoning
reply

The organizing principle of any society throughout history is warfare. The authority of the state over it's people resides in it's war powers.
reply

What do you do if someone refuses to acknowledge they owe you a debt and is more convincing to the tribe that you owe him a debt instead?
reply

You know what we need to go to war? Resources.
We went on the war for glory, and in order to run a war, we need resources.
