two things you missed:
1. food surplus didn't mean that EVERYBODY was well fed back then anymore than it does now. with -surplus- came hoarders, greed and class divisions.
2. you failed to mention the environmental differences between the two groups, as in the world of technology you love so much is causing an overload of ecological destruction, while the -barbarians- live pretty much in harmony with nature, causing little, if any, far reaching long-term damage.
-civilization- breeds conformity, selfishness and intolerance, things that some of us have no interest in partaking in.

What he said about -hill people- fleeing from civilization reminds me of the Indian Republicans in Latin America when it the Spanish took over (Indian Republicans were the area outside of the cities the Spanish built/taken control over where the Natives of Latin America took refuge and had less influence from the Spaniards) or the various guerrilla armies and the people living under them in remote areas in countries like Mexico and Colombia today.
