In which John continues the discussion of JD Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. This week John reads the novel with Salinger's life story in mind. John explores how Salinger's war experience, educational background, and romantic life inform the events of Holden Caulfield's life. How did Holden get to be such a whiny, self-absorbed teen? While it's not a great idea to read novels too biographically, Salinger's life surely informed Holden's. Watch on to get an idea just how much

1: 01 To be fair, WWII only lasted a FEW years. What's a few years in comparison to a total LIFETIME? Not that I'm trying to take anything from that war, and the experiences thereof, but WWII, like all other wars before and after it, came to an end and then there's the reality of the ordinary human condition to face.

Hearing you talk about this book like this makes me want to love it, but I still can-t. Holden is almost exactly like someone that physically abused someone I-m very close to, and in the story he doesn-t really try to get better, like the person I know in real life.

Can anyone help me? I'm looking for this quote, -We all know what it's like to be outside of the evening staring often to the distance, at the future that may never be ours. - -John Green. it is said by John green in one of his videos but I can't find it

I enjoy your work. I was wondering if you'd review -Light In August. - It's my favorite book and Faulkner is my favorite author. I was able to finally understand Faulkner after reading criticism written by Cleanth Brooks.

I read this years ago when I was a kid and the thing that I remembered was that Allie died. I t really stood out for me. Its like the whole book is about Holden trying to come to terms with his brother's death.

John Green, thank you for a really interesting critique of my favourite book. I thought what you said at the beginning of part one about Catcher being at odds with our visual-led culture were right on the money.

These videos finally made me read this book. It's been on my list for years but I was never read it. To tell the truth, I wasn't in the mood for it before. But I finally read it and it killed me, it really did.

I gotta be honest, John Green is going to be the one getting me through high school at the moment. Not that Im terrible at school but this is just the kind of support I need to help me get through my courses.

So, Holden wants to protect Pheobe's innocence and Pheobe protects Holden. By giving him his hat she protects him from the rain and symbolically grants him his innocence and the confidence to keep going.
