It is said some type of smog had often, or always, occurred in the industrial area of my region, such situation already ended when I was child though. Watching any world news program, scenes in which it is difficult to look far are sometimes seen. I think the nearby industrial area had the same scene as them decades ago.

I liked the vocabulary today. The word 'grip' is particularly uneasy to use for me. It is everywhere and most of the time I can't catch the meaning from the context. And interesting to know that smog comes from a combination of fog and smoke... good data!.

In case of a crash in civil aviation they usually ask passengers to 'brace for the impact' it means that you've got to take a special position in the seat when you lean towards your kneels something like that....
