Top 10 Reasons Why We Live in a Yurt - How We Get OFF GRID Solar Power Jeffrey: for your battery/ solar and inverter setup: find a location to mount all batteries and inverter(s); use extension cords (12ga wire for current safety) or hardwire the inverters thru a breaker box. Connect all batteries in parallel along with the solar panels. This will increase your available current and keep the voltage at +12VDC. as well as keep all the batteries charged. All of them at the same time. suggest setting up a frame for the roof of the yurt that does not puncture the membrane, to mount your solar panels. it is the most open area around your house. when calculating how much power you need it is a function of both voltage and current. You had in a video where you were not able to run a 1500 w blender off a 100 w inverter. P-IE (Power>watts = I> amps X E>volts) eg) 1500w / 120VAC = 12. 5 Amps: 100w/12 vdc = 8. 3333 Amps dc To wire in parallel; tie all the power sources (batteries and solar panels) together positive leads -red- together and all negative (black) leads together. separately. red to red and black to black. also install a switch somewhere in the red/positive line of the solar panels to be able to separate the solar panels from the batteries. Have a local electrician assist you in figuring out what wattage consumption you will have then calculate your inverter size from that. It is also suggested to put your well pump on a separate system. also your electronics are better off if you can charge them with the DC current straight out of the solar panels or batteries. The inverter and ac motored appliances puts noise on the electronics. it is possible to get DC chargers for computers.
I understand there is a lot here but hopefully it is helpful

Thanks for all your wonderful inspiring adventures you have shared with us. I just found your site and am watching each video. It will take some time. I am always learning new gardening things (30)+ years it is nice to learn new things. You both have such beautiful bright energy which inspires me to want to watch more. Can you please list those solar units you were telling us about. I only got the name of the solar panels but not the inverter, battery, charge controller. Here at our Homestead -The Chuchy Farm- we are transforming this small piece of land into a oasis of Peace and Joy. Thanks again for your Beautiful work.
Universal Blessings!

Thank you so much for the yurt and solar information. Saying all in an easy to understand manner. we have an off grid -camp- and I love the newer solar information- it-s changed so much! When I last looked into it (20 years ago) Our neighbor at our camp on an island had to have several panels and a wall of batteries with a lot of wires and it just wasn-t efficient. Also the lightweight panels at the time took days of full sun to charge a battery. they were using lights, a radio, perhaps an odd small gadget. But it just was always a struggle. Today is so much more efficient and easier judging by what you have!
Thank you again.

Really nice, Good job well done. One thing i never saw you insulate the floor, would make a huge difference in the winter. Now the only thing that would be on my mind is with all those tall trees, if one ever comes down on your yurt it would be a total loss, not to mention, there is not much there to protect you two. i saw years ago a tree came down on a 40' camper right over from ours and it cut the camper completely in half, that is scary.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on solar. my husband and I just bought our first home back in March and we've been thinking about trying out solar panels for a while but just haven't done it yet. it's your thoughts and opinions on solar panels that also helps me think about doing it for my home. We love watching your videos and we hope to see lots more in the future, you guys are awesome please keep up the good work!

you should invest in a pure sine wave inverter, that little Modified sine wave could hurt sensitive electronics due to its square waveform (makes electronics buzz) and get some LV wire, mount the charge controller under the yurt and charge battery there, it gets it out of the weather, and also you could then run one wire up to the inverter in the house. and not have to hook up a battery each day, just flick a switch.

Ush! How do municipalities address the issue of taxes with a yurt? The infrastructure is quite different than a traditional brick-and-mortar house. I love the concept of yurt living, but I have way too much stereo equipment, albums, etc. to make that a practical choice. (Unless I built a really BIG-ass yurt, but that kind of defeats the whole purpose, eh ) You guys are doing great, you-re truly blessed!

The drastic changes of your lives inspire me so much that I feel we are both living in a village Jake. It is very very cool to see you experiencing what nature has to offer in our lives. I have a Solar system at Home. It is very very useful. It is running like 11 40 watts AC bulbs in our house. We have power 24/7 in our house. Thanks for the video and thanks for sharing your experiences.

You will need to have at least 400 watt hour PV capacity and an efficient inverter especially if you go for a week without charging capacity also you should also consider high efficiency Solar Panels- see your local PV specialists or someone who will calculate your electrical needs

Are you guys going to follow Derek and Hannah's example and use used car batteries for your solar system.
I'm not living in a yurt yet, but I'm planning to at least while I build either an Earthship or an Earthbag home. After that it will be a guest house.
