This one s for you, Mazda MX-5 fans We ve got our hands on every generation of MX-5, and they re going head-to-head in a drag race! So let s examine how these four RWD pocket rockets compare. Starting with the Mk1, it was released back in 1989, and it s powered by a 1. 8-litre naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder that can produce 131hp and 152Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual, and it tips the scales at 990kg. Alongside it, we have Mat in the Mk2 facelift. This was released in 1998, and under the bonnet, you ll find a 1. 8-litre 4-cylinder that can put down 146hp and 168Nm. Just like the Mk1, power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual, but this car is slightly heavier, weighing in at 1, 065kg. Next up is the Mk3. It s powered by a 2-litre 4 cylinder that can produce 160hp and 188Nm, and this time power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual. It s the heaviest car in this line-up, tipping the scales at 1, 100kg. Then finally we have the newest car, the Mk4 - and it s the anniversary edition! It s housing a 2-litre 4-cylinder under the bonnet, and it ll come as no surprise that it s the most powerful car here, producing 184hp and 205Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual, and it weighs in at 1, 030kg. So will it be a clean sweep for the Mk4? Or could we see one of the older cars snatch a surprise win? There s only one way to find out for sure LET S RACE!

A great video for our reference. As i own one of the rivals; the MR2 (mk3) roadster. Facelift 6 speed model. Stock the 1. 8L does 138hp. The current weight is about 1020kg. It has long gearing tho as UK model.
Then i added air intake bolt ons, exhaust bolt ons + an ECU remap by Unichip. Premium fuel. Millers cfs engine oil.
Its running at around 160hp now. I got a 15. 22sec at santapod. (Same time as a 192hp BMW E30 M3 i beleive)
And I think if you did similar mods on the mk2 MX5, it could also get a much better time. Mid 15s at least

Owned a NA, used a NB as a rental when the NA was in the shop, bought a NC because i wanted more luxery and now with fuel prices i want a ND.
But i feel like the NA is the hero car, the NB is the build car, the NC is the track car, and the ND is the best modern car. But the roof opening in closing can be done in like 10 seconds you guys need to practice: D

reply

smh at Brits still calling the NA/NB/NC/ND mk1/2/3/4. It's not a Golf or a WW1 tank, Matt, the generations are not called mk anything. Literally no one in the world outside of the UK calls them that.

Probably the best episode of carwow I've seen so far.
Absolutely enjoyed this, the banter between the 4 of you was hilarious.
Just need to do a car tour episode and we'll be on to a winner.

Brilliant video. Awesome to see Mat thrashing my NB in this video! What a great day! Is the video with mine Vs Mats and the BBR coming out soon? Can't believe you never heard of Skippinish. Hahaha!
reply

The roof test was a reference to the roadster drag race, which was the McLaren roadster, the Mercedes amg roadster, the Audi R8 roadster and the BMW I8 with yanni and Professor green
reply

This was better than any Top Gear races, the drivers all had a really good laugh, and we got to see all the gens of the Mazda MX-5! Carwow is the best! Keep it up, Matt and the team!
reply

The NC looks much better than the girly NB. The NA is of course the nicest. Althought the ND looks good too. But this special model is of course not a fair play with that 184hp.
reply

Great video, roof race was the best though!
However the Mk3 PRHT and the Mk4 RF are always forgotten in the mx5 challenges. would have been good to add them

reply

The MK3 here is the worst looking yes, but Mazda significantly improved it after the face-lift.
The mk3. 5 sport tech is one of the best looking MX5s IMO

reply

please next every rx generation
even with the rx8 both the 190 and 232 hp version try to find a good compression engine for realistic results.

reply

Impressive the modern nd still just over 1000kg. I would have thought they ballooned up more.
The mk2 & 4 are the best looking imo. That nc. oof

reply

There's just something satisfying about manhandling that stiff rod with your hand, some even come with decorative caps & in many shapes.
reply

im leaning towards the ND but the NC is actually quote good to.
Im going to get a Rocketeer but cant decide on an NC or ND as the doner

reply

AS good as it is, I can't like the ND. Looks like a toy car and isn't unique as Fiat use the chasis too. For me, the NC is the best overall
reply

That ND is finally competitive with the S2000 from 2000. And at a reasonable price. Doesn't sound great but hey, can't win them all.
reply

Same got done dirty on the roof test - his windows were up and he wound them back down to lower the roof again, the same as everyone else.
reply

I dont get that Drag thing. but then again if you know how to drive, an MX-5 beats many sports cars on twisties. Love my mine, NC 2011.
