Welcome to the fourth in a series of videos set to answer the crucial question: will it drift? We have four 4wd hot hatchbacks - the new 2021 Volkswagen Golf R, the latest Mercedes-AMG A45 S, the Toyota GR Yaris and a Mk3 Ford Focus RS. And we're taking them all to a low-grip skidpan to answer that most vital of questions. Will they go sideways? Then we have a two-wheel drive not-exactly-conventional-hatchback, too. The Renault Clio V6. This time it's the Toyota GR Yaris. It has Toyota's own four-wheel drive system with a torque sensing (Torsen) differential at the front, an electro mechanical clutch in the middle, and another limited-slip Torsen differential at the back. The rear axle can take anything up to 70% of overall system torque and is even geared 1% faster than the front axle. Will that be enough on this very low grip, very slow, Thruxton skid pan, though? Or will it take the handbrake to help? This series complements a written Autocar feature about torque vectoring, that includes full technical details and interviews with the engineers behind these cars. We'll update this description when it goes online - but for now, don't forget you ca pick up the magazine in all good newsagents and via digital subscription

I don't understand any of this series of videos. You have small cars with AWD systems that function by taking available power and sending some of it to the back. the front axle is always engaged. So if you don't apply any throttle. there's no power going to the back. so how do you expect them to drift! None of these cars send all power to the rear. the front is always engaged. So the rear won't kick out when you are just driving around with 1% throttle.
I just don't understand the point of these videos.

FIRST OF ALL, TURN OF TRACTION/STABILITY CONTROL PROPERLY! Yet more journalist not actually properly learning how to setup and drive a car properly, YOU STILL HAD TRACTION CONTROL ON. Secondly I've had no problems getting very sideways on power alone in the wet in sport mode, even more fun on a wet sandy beach, can drift for days, but the traction has to be properly off, AKA NOT EXPERT MODE, proper off mode or totally disabled by doing pedal dance or fuse out job. Remake the video and do it properly!

My take: the GR Yaris is an absolute weapon and the most fun you can have for such an affordable price tag. A note about the Circuit Pack/Rallye version - you ONLY need this if you are a track enthusiast. Otherwise the open diff does an awesome job and you won't really make use of the LSD's unless you're a track nut. Happy driving: )

Sorry, but you're doing it wrong. Too much throttle and for too long. On a skid pad with the GR Yaris, you need to give veeery quickly veeeery tiny throttle impulses (on/off) in first gear and it will come nicely (Sports Mode. Took me a while to sort this out

I accept I may be a lone voice! I-m extremely glad my new GR Yaris will be reluctant to drift. The fact that it grips the tarmac is a positive for me --.

It worries me that people will drive this great car not knowing how to set it and think it-s trash. Then less chance of getting more cars like this.

This clip seems like they wanted the last sentence tag line to fit. Then went out to make the video.

And the award for the most boring, pointless video of the GR Yaris goes to.
(apologies to potential buyers who live on a frozen lake)

I want a Yaris with its normal body with 5 doors but slightly wider tread with 4WD 260PS so that all family members can rush to anywhere.
